Hi,
I'm fairly new to the boards but have read enough to know this question might be risky. However, I really want to hear from people who have done Disney, IOA and Universal with kids, My DD will be 4 and my niece will be 10. DD is 41 inches tall. We are planning on doing 3-4 days fo Universal and IOA, and 1-2 days at Disney. We are definitely going to MK. If you've done this, I would really like to know how your trip went! Thanks:)

Hi! We have not been to IOA yet, but last trip we did all of the Disney parks and went to US one day. We always go to one non-Disney park each trip. In 2004 it was Sea World. Anyway, we enjoyed US. My son had just turned 5 at the time (but was not 40 inches last trip - he is a peanut). He really enjoyed the Woody Woodpecker coaster. He did not like Shrek but that is just him. Other young children probably love it. He enjoyed the Animal Planet Live show. He was too short for Men in Black, but I think he would have liked it. I am thinking Jaws was closed, but I would not have put him on it anyway. He looked bored during the Barney show. That is all I can remember without looking at a map. The Mummy was great! But of course, he could not do that.

I am really looking forward to going to IOA for the first time next trip. My oldest will be 6 and youngest 16 months at that time. I think Seuss Landing looks like a lot of fun.

Just to be honest, I would not recommend IOA for children. It is mostly thrill rides, and there won't be much for them to do there. Even the "kiddie" rides all spin (like the Seuss ride), and gets even adults dizzy, in my opinion. I don't think there is nearly enough even for adults to spend that many days at either Universal park. They are really small. So small they are in walking distance of each other. I was absolutely miserable when we had to spend 2 days there. I got so bored. I think all the Universal movie attractions are extremely boring. Please don't flame me for saying that. It is my absolute, honest, truth.

We have done Universal once with our kids (7 and 4 at the time) and Disney several times. We have not done both on one trip, though.

Here are a few thoughts for you, and you will get many other opinions :thumbsup2 :

1. STRONGLY consider staying onsite at one of the Universal hotels for your time at Universal. Universal in general does not seem to handle lines as efficiently as Disney (my personal experience), and the Front of the Line access that you get with staying onsite is hugely valuable. Even if you stay one night at a Universal hotel, you get two days of FOTL access- check in day and check out day. With FOTL, you can do Universal Studios and IOA in two full days if you want.

Case in point: when we went to Universal last summer, Dr. Seuss's Trolley Train Ride had recently opened. There are two separate tracks, so of course we had to do both - many times each. The standby line was 30 minutes EACH time - we probably rode 30 times over two days. With FOTL, we waited about two minutes each time. We also were able to ride the other Seuss rides over and over again. There was not much that my four year old was interested in IOA, so riding the rides over and over in Seuss Landing was how she spent her time.

2. Which leads me to the next point - your 10 year old niece will have a lot more things to do and ride than your four year old DD, so I hope you will have two adults. DD4 was over 40 inches tall when we went, but she hated Spiderman and didn't want to ride anything remotely scary. We spent a lot of time at Seuss Landing, which is incredibly well-themed. Same was true when we went to Universal Studios - DD4 had no interest in Shrek, Jimmy Neutron, etc. She wanted to see the Barney show, and her 7 year old sister had ZERO interest in being seen at the Barney show :rotfl: . We split up again, with DH taking DD7 and me taking DD4. DD4 did agree to ride ET, but that was about it past Barney. We spent the rest of the afternoon back at Seuss Landing while DH and DD7 did the rest of the Studios.

3. Now for the Disney part: My kids (now 8 and 4) have been to WDW five and three times, respectively. It usually takes us a full day to get out of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom, and typically DH will take DD8 off to do Space Mountain and Splash Mountain by himself. We always plan two full days at MK, and sometimes come back for a third day or at least an evening. If this is your first trip, you could easily spend 6 or 7 days if you wanted to see all four parks. Disney does their part by making a five day ticket only a few dollars more than a four day ticket - they want you to stay there longer. A four day adult ticket is about $215, a five day is $220. A two-day ticket is $140.

So my advice if you want to do both parks, whether you are staying onsite at Disney or not:

Come for a week or as long as you can. Spend one or two nights onsite at Universal. The hotels are beautiful and the perks are well worth the cost. You can get Universal done in two days if you choose. Spend the remaining four, five, six, whatever days at Disney. We always stay onsite - we love the transportation, the early entry, and the 24 hour magic. People are just as passionate about staying off-site - it generally costs less and there are much better options for larger families and groups. Plan to spend several days at the WDW parks - you will not run out of things to do!

We did Disney + Universal and Islands of Adventure two years in a row. My daughter was 5 the first time. She loved Suess Landing, the Flying Unicorn rollercoaster, the ET ride, and Woody Woodpecker's rollercoaster. She really liked these parks! (My son, who is younger, loved the Barney show and the Cat in the Hat ride.)

The thing we liked the best was that if you stay at a hotel onsite, you can show the line attendants your room keycard so you can move to the front of all the lines in the parks!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I think we will have a blast at both places. While my DD isn't yet 5, she is a daredevil. In fact, she would ride everything if she were tall enough. The more motion the better for her, so I actually think she will like rides like Spiderman and the Seuss rides. We will not be staying onsite at either park. We are staying with my sister who lives in Orlando. Hey, you can't beat free lodging:banana: Next year we will probably do more Disney, but this yeaqr, my sister and her kids have annual passes to Universal. And the Universal 7day/2 park for $86.00 a person was too good to pass up. Thanks again! I hope you all have a great time on your vacations!

We always do both!! There is alot to do that kids will enjoy at US/IOA.

We went to Universal/IOA for 2 days before we went to Disney last Sept. Our kids were 5 and 7 and they really did enjoy Universal/IOA, but 2 days was more than enough. We only spent between 1/2-3/4 of each of those 2 days at the parks and my kids were done. Part of that was that the lines were great and we got on everything we wanted pretty quickly. I will say that you'll probably want to split up because your younger child will want different things than your older one.

Now, we spent 6 days at Disney and we all could have stayed more. Since Disney is not much more expensive to add days, I would definitely do that instead and just spend a couple of days at Universal/IOA, or skip it altogether if money is tight. While we enjoyed our time at Universal, we won't be doing it this year when we go as we all enjoyed Disney so much more.

Have fun! :goodvibes

We just got back from a Universal trip and had a 3 year old with us for the Universal Studios day - there was lots to see and do. We also had my 10 year old and a bunch of teens.

The Universal parks have some great kid area & play areas though you'll want an adult with the kids at Camp Jurassic because there are multiple exit areas.

Rides your kids will enjoy at Islands of Adventure:
Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls (Wet / must be 44")
Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges (Wet / must be 42")
Camp Jurassic (multiple exits)
Pteranadon Flyers
The Flying Unicorn
TStorm Force Accelatron (Like the teacups at Disney)
and all of Seuss Landing. (5 attractions)
They may enjoy The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (40") and The Jurassic Park River Adventure (42") - if they don't frighten easily. They're not really scary, just a little intense.
About Pteranadon Flyers - if you want to do this, you absolutely must be at the park before it opens and go straight there when it opens. This ride has seats that are suspended about the Jurassic Park area and you kind of soar over things. My 10 year old enjoyed it. But here's the thing - it is a short ride but they can only accomodate 6 or 8 riders at a time and the line gets to 60 or 80 minutes long almost immediately. It is worth a ride only if the line is 20 minutes or less.

Rides at Universal Studios:
Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast (40")
Shrek 4-D
A Day in the Park wtih Barney (sing-along show)
Curious George Goes to Town (playground)
Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster
Fievels Playland
E.T. Adventure
Again, if they're thrill-seekers, they enjoy Earthquake, Twister, Jaws, and Men in Black Alien Attack (42", like Buzz Lightyear only more MIB )

We bought the book "Beyond Disney" which is by the writers of the UG and has touring info for the universal parks. There's also some info in the UG. Very worthwhile.
