Facebook is the most popular social network in the world. I think there should be a Dislike potion in the Facebook. What do you think about it?

Amen. Every time I don't like something on FB I post "FB still needs a dislike button" Then people like my comment :lmao:

I think Facebook is afraid things at some point will escalate between a couple nutcases and someone will end up getting killed over a disliked comment. I don't think they want any part of that type of lawsuit.

Keeping it positive.

I totally agree. It's always weird to me to read a status like ..Lost my brother today, totally devastated and see that it has ten likes. Really? You like that? :confused3

I think the reason why it's not an option is some might see it as another way to cyber-bully someone.

I agree that sometimes "like" is not appropriate for bad news, but they do offer another option (writing a personal comment.) I also think most people understand that, while "like" might not be appropriate for every situation, when people click it, most are basically saying "I don't really have anything to add to the conversation, but I saw your post and I support you."

I have seen enough people obsess over/read meaning into who didn't like or didn't comment on a specific post (passive "did not choose to like"), that if people started actively disliking things, I can see it causing more drama than it solves.

I don't find it necessary. I am able to use words, emoticons, etc, etc to show my dislike about a subject without needing a dislike button. Sometimes we need to stop being so lazy as a society and willing to take the extra step to interact with each other in this technology dependent world. No offense intended and I will step off my soap box now. :flower3:

I agree with you. There's enough drama on Facebook without it. can you imagine what would happen with a dislike button?

I seem to recall that at one time there was a dislike (unlike) button, but my guess is they got overwhelmed by people using it and did away with it?

A dislike button would destroy Facebook. What makes Facebook work is the huge network of connections. The dislike button would strongly encourage unfriending and would shrink the number of connections greatly.

Here are pictures of my cat
DISLIKE - not a cat person
What you don't like my cute little kitty, I'm going to unfriend you

Right now it is very much - if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. While folks may not like what they see - they aren't going to bother to post a negative comment - a quick button click is another matter. And it will be dislike without explanation, so it is wide open to interpretation.

Did she dislike my cat picture because she is a cat hater? Or because she thought that I post too many cat pictures? Or because she thought that the cat was being teased? Or because of the hat I was wearing in the picture?

It will lead to folks getting angry and upset and will result in folks unfriending others which degrades "the social network".

If you dislike something so much that you want to click the button - post a comment and let them know you dislike it - you can simply write "dislike" I think after doing it a couple of times and seeing the response, you will understand completely why Facebook does not have a dislike button.

Actually it was a Firefox Extension (Don't know if there was a Chrome one) that worked, but only if the person who's status you were disliking had it installed as well. A later update to it including a nasty little computer virus that caused it to go away for good.

Oh yeah, a "dislike" button would really have things boiling over. :scared1:

Newspaper comment boards like Discuss are moving away from the dislike button as well. I have no idea why.

I miss the dislike option because it kept the trolls in check or at least made them very easy to spot.

I think it's fine the way it is. I don't have an overwhelming need to tell my FB friends and Family I disliked something they posted. Their life and my life will go on if I don't let my cousin know I don't like her latest cat picture or whatever.

Several other people mentioned how the like button, while feels unsuitable for sad/upsetting posts, it is understood to mean "I support you" or some such thing.

A few months ago I read that Facebook was planning on adding a "Sympathize" button for those types of posts where "Like" isn't really the right word. I don't know if it got nixed or if it's still coming at some point.
