my wife grew up putting the utensils up (eg. fork and knife sharp ends toward the ceiling) because it would get the main eating and dirtiest area clean....which sounds great except i grew up putting the utensils down because who wants someone grabbing the eating end of the fork with their grubby, nasty fingers when they are removing the utensil from the dishwasher...

this is causing some friction...so what's your vote??

UP or DOWN

Ooh...down for that reason and I remember someone's child fell or climbed onto the dishwasher door and then fell onto the utensils with points up! After that happened, I knew I would always keep them points down!

Down, for your reason, and the fact that I'd rather not get stabbed in the hand first thing in the morning.

up. our washing machine has a utensil basket that you can flip open, so you can grab the utensils by the handles even if they're pointing up.

Definitely up. Don't people wash their hands before emptying the dishwasher??!?!?!?!

I say down - for the sake of my skin. DH says up. SInce I do the loading, it's my way. :p

Some up, some down. We put in the utensils so that no two like utensils will "spoon" (sorry) together. Only DH and I unload the DW, and we wash our hands first.

prongs & blades up, everything else down.

Up. Just wash your hands really well before you unload the dishwasher. In fact, you should do that no matter what. Read the manual that comes with your dishwasher. It will tell you that you should put them in that way. (I do put steak knives down since they're so sharp.)

If you have children in the house, remove the utensil basket immediately when you open the dishwasher so that you don't have any potential accidents. Take the basket to the silverware drawer and unload it there.

hear hear, she knows what she is taking about. :D

Down, don't need anyone getting hurt trying to unload the dishwasher!! That would surely be a possiblilty in my house!!

down......my wooden handled steak knives are done by hand.....and my other steak knives are point down......I have grabbed utensils and ended up bleeding all over the dishwasher......so anything sharp are down.......

Up.
(Actually, I do not put my flatware and utensils - except plastic - in the dishwasher because they spot and sometimes rust. We do not have the best "stuff." ;) )

I wash dishes by hand and I ALWAYS put the silverware with the "eating" ends UP!!! The thought of the water running down and maybe puddling down at the same end we eat off of grosses me out. Also, I've been to people's houses where you can actually see the water stains on the tips of the spoons from the water running down them, and/or food particles stuck on the eating ends!!!! BLECH!
If someone pays attention to what they're doing, there should be no reason they'd get cut. Of course, I am not referring to little kids, accidents can happen. Another thing, when I am putting away the silverware after it has dried, I grab it down around the handle, not the eating end!!!!

Can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine?? I can't stand dirty or stained silverware! :p

P.S. When I had a dishwasher, I did the same thing, I put the eating ends of the silverware UP!

ditto what Hes said...

You're supposed to wash utensils?

Wow, that explains a lot of things. Thanks! ;)
