Dishes

When we were first married (1971) we received a set for a wedding gift. We liked it then but switched to different stoneware type dishes through out the years. As we aged those dishes got heavier ;) We recently went back to Corelle. Love our Corelle- not only is it lighter it takes up less space in the cupboard!

Another vote for Corelle. I remember going to buy our first set with my parents in the 70s at Lechmere Sales in Cambridge, MA. At that time, store clerks were demonstrating its durability by dropping pieces on the floor to show they don’t generally break. We still have that original set in Mom’s house. Today I have a nice white and black set I love.

Lechmere!!!! Blast from the past....We must be around the same age group...lol

While Corelle is very durable and usually don't break when dropped but when we built our home, we put in tile flooring in our kitchen. I've dropped a couple of Corelle dishes and they have all shattered on the tile.

This was my experience too. I have always heard how durable Corelle is. Once, I was babysitting and the family had Corelle. One of the little kids made a comment on how Corelle breaks. I told them, "No, it doesn't. It's not supposed to break. Here, watch. . ."

I held up a plate in front of them and was about to let it drop, like I had seen in old Corelle commercials.

Both little kids put their hands over their ears and physically winced, waiting for the drop. That should have been a clue to me. Instead, I was puzzled as to why they were acting that way.

I let the plate drop from my hand, expecting it to just roll on the ground like the commercials that they no longer air. The loudest, earth-shattering crash on the floor occurred as the plate shattered and spread out all over the floor in a million pieces, a lot of them were tiny, tiny glass splinters that I worried if I would get them all. :scared:

I talked to the mom later, and she says that Corelle can get brittle after many years. The kids have witnessed the earth shattering breaks before which is why they knew to cover their ears.

I have no clue if it happened on a tile floor. I just know, nope, no Corelle for me. :(

A couple days ago, while I was flipping channels, I came across a home shopping network selling these MacKenzie-Childs designer dinnerware sets. I love this designer for decor. I just love the white Flower Garden collection. The dinnerware and servingware are made of handpainted enamel over metal plates & bowls. Quite unbreakable. For RVing, they are quite a step up from average camp dinnerware.

Wow …so many Corelle fans! I was actually hoping to see an alternative recommendation. But nope. Corelle is it.
I’m actually kind of a china freak. I love dishes and keep adding sets. With all that china, what do we use… Corelle. It’s the only kind that survives kids and DH loading the dishwasher. Form meets function. :cheer2:

We have the Corelle, no complaints at all. Heck some of that stuff is pushing 30 years old now. (unfortunately we have a mixture of about 4 different sets)
