We got one of the usual credit card informational mailings about changes to our Disney VISA card. I read the small print and here's what I found:

If you payment is not received on time, your account is considered in default.

If you account is in default, your Disney points earned can be forfeited and you cannot earn any more.

(So, if your payment is even 1 day late they can take everything away from you.)

If you close your account for any reason, your Disney points earned are forfeited.

Sheeeeeeeeesh. I'm paying this thing off. I guess I'll lose my points earned because I'm paying the card off.

The saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you comes to mind." Having those Disney points burning a hole in your pocket is a good reason to book a Disney trip where I'll spend waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than the few Disney dollars I've earned. I mean, if not for earning Disney points, why not just get a different credit card, I mean hey, we all get thousands of applications daily for them.

Anyone else here disgusted with the Disney VISA card? I mean, I didn't think it was that great of a deal to begin with, but I thought that maybe I could get some good discounts by using the card. I'm better off with an annual pass or looking for codes.

I just got a letter saying that I would receive double rewards on anything I buy for the next 12 months. That sounds good to me. We put everything on our card and pay it off each month.

Did you get the same letter? I would think about taking advantage of the 2% back for 1 year before I cancelled the card.

Lori

You'll find that this is true of any card. They are offering you an incentive to use their card. When you you don't keep to the agreement should they really reward you?

They don't seem unreasonable to me. I just make my payments on time. The due date is a due date and not some fudgy little date that we can stretch out.

Hi Lori, just curious,

Did your letter come from Bank One or Disney? The informational mailing I got was from Bank One, just like the usual informational mailings they send out. I haven't seen the double rewards letter yet. Maybe if I get the letter I'll rethink it. Thanks for the info.

Agree with fantasymagic. I cut up my Disney Visa for the same reasons. I went with Amex Blue, but that might be a stinker too.

However, my wife loves Disney Visa and I hope she gets a letter like PirateoftheCarolinas did. We got a letter the other day, but it was more of those convienence checks. Fantasymagic, maybe you'll get the same letter. 2% is hard to beat.

I didn't get the card in the mail either, but on another thread someone mentioned checking online. So I went online to my account and looked in current offers(it fell under "other disney offers") and I receive double rewards on amounts spent over $850 each month. On another thread there was a huge discussion on the differences in amounts needed to spend to gain the 2% rewards. Some people get double rewards on all purchases and some went as high as a $2300 minimum to get double rewards. I guess I shouldn't complain at my $850! I don't usually spend that much on the card so I am not really going to benefit from it.
I have been using it a lot in the past six months to pay for all of the vacation(hotel, airfare, tix, etc) and have $300 in free rewards so I am content with that.

My letter was on the Disney Visa letterhead. I'm surprised other people haven't gotten the same form letter. The double rewards started on July 1 but I got the letter this week. My minimum amount was $850 but we always spend 3 times that amount in a month. I put everything on it.

Lori

My bill is always around $2000 to $3000 a month. We pay it off each month. This is the first time we are eligible for any extra reward. I called the last time and questioned why we weren't eligible. They said basically because we use the card enough already, etc. Anyway we have to spend over $550 a month to get the double points now.

In reference to the OP, why are you going to lose the points/dollars if you pay off the card? Can't you just keep the card and not use it until you have used all your disney dollars?Or can't you get the disney dollars awarded and then close the account? The card you get for the award dollars is separate from the credit card anyway. Just something to think about.

I received a letter for the double points but had to spend over a certain amount and it had to be spent on specific categories like automotive, groceries.

Mine was $2300....:( I suppose they base it on how much you spend each month now and want you to increase it.

I'm pretty satisfied with the card. I've had this one since they started and a couple of months ago got the $50 offer for new cardholders in my stockholders statement. Everyone in my immediate family got one and got the $50 in DD!

The rules they have are no different than any other credit card.

Here's mine:

Just spend with your Disney's Visa® Card on the spending categories listed below in any calendar month from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005.1 Once you spend in a calendar month, you’ll earn 2% in Disney Dream Reward DollarsSM for every additional dollar you spend over on:

Everyday purchases: groceries, drugstores, gas, dining, dry cleaning

Monthly expenses: utilities, cell phone, home improvements

Entertainment: movies/refreshments, video rentals

I guess it's a good thing I didn't use the card much before. I have another card that offers 1%, but I'm using my Disney one now.

You're not going to lose your points just by paying your card off. They are saying that if you CLOSE (ie cancel) your account, then you won't get the rewards. So, if you're planning on closing the account, then just redeem the points before doing so.

I also don't think the other stipulations are unreasonable. There are usually penalties for paying your bills late on all credit cards. Usually, it can be an increase in your APR or a cancellation of a special promotional low APR.

If you pay off your balance, you don't lose your points, but if you cancel the card, you do.

Sorry folks, I just don't get it, I have to charge $1000 just to get $10 in rewards, no thanks, I too fell victim when I first seen that beautiful looking Red Disney Card.

Now its gone, I'm even willing to give up my pins.

But if it is $1000 that you'd be spending anyway. We have several no fee reward credit cards and as long as we pay off the full balance each month, we come out ahead.

We got the letter yesterday. We get double rewards for anything over $350. Since we're heading to wdw in 7 days I shouldn't have any problem earning 2% rewards for this trip.

Thank you eveyrone for the clarification. I obviously didn't read through the fine print clearly enough. My apologies. :guilty:

I am sticking to my Delta Sky Miles American Express. I always get double miles on groceries, gas, etc and from June 15 to July 15, double miles on everything. DH has the gold card Amex rewards. Double miles for him begins July 15 through Aug. 15, just in time for our Hawaiian vacation, which is by the way, how five of us are making our third trip to the islands, DH and I in first class. Can't beat the mileage cards.
