So my dad wanted to get my mother a Boston terrier pup for her birthday. She has wanted one for such a longtime. My dad looks around and can't find anything for less than $1500
and those pups were all from pet stores
(where we all know they are generally puppy mill dogs). So I started looking around to see if I could find a private breeder. My parents live in NY and I live in NC so I looked around my area, figuring that if I found a puppy, they could come visit mo to pick it up.
Well I found a puppy. The "kennel" it was advertised in breeds goldendoodles (golden retriever/poodle crosses
) as well as all manner of crosses and some purebreds (boston terriers, labs, weimeraners, pomerainians, chihhuahuas, poodles, goldens etc.) My gut went right to "puppy mill" since NO reputable breeder has more than one...MAYBE two breeds going on. PLUS, the website actually has FOR SALE, dogs advertised as the result of "accidental breeding" (one extremely homely poodle/husky cross and a weimeraner/lab cross). That smacks right there of iresponsible breeding.
But my dad insisted on calling this slimeball breeder anyway (while I was busy researching the place online). Get this:
1. Her dogs are not AKC registered...they are UKCI (universal kennel club) registered. SHE claims, "oh it's the same thing"
2. Dogs come with a health guarnatee...that you pay extra for if you want it.
3. NOBODY is allowed onto the kennel premises!!! That means you must buy the dog sight unseen. You cannot choose your pup, see it, play with it or even see the "parents". She claims it's to prevent parvo. I found out that she did indeed have a parvo outbreak...and she sold the infected dogs to people across the country. The dog arrived at the airport DOA!
4. She isn;t registered with the USDA (anyone with 3 or more breeding females is supposed to bereg with the USDA) but since she doesn't sell her dogs to any pet stores, she flys under the radar.
I told my dad to run screaming in the other direction (which he did). I found them a lovely local breeder who breeds her dogs in the home and only does Bostons. She was recommended by the AKC to me.
Places like this kennel sicken me. Her "kennel" is a double wide surrounded by a stockade fence with a bunch of doghouses in the yard. I wish I could get her canned by the ASPCA. It makes me very angry.
