DISers--I need your help. They won't quit calling me!(Update!!!)

Well, the only person we know of that it could possibly be a collection agent for is my sister.

Or..quite possibly, it could be for one of my stepsisters who (despite being a very sweet person)is married to the world's biggest loser who can't keep a job to save his life. They are constantly in fear of losing their trailer and have moved all over Texas for different jobs that never lasted very long. :( My stepsister's DH is just *waiting* for his father to die because (supposedly) when the dad DOES die, he's going to leave everything to my not so DBIL and it's going to be worth a *fortune*. Supposedly. So it could be for them..for all I know.

I'm pretty sure it's one of those two. Now if I could just figure out WHICH one....

Also the Do not Call registry that you signed up with when it first came out expired and you have to reregister. There was something on these boards at the end of last year. Go to https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE
NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free. Your registration will be effective for five years.

The national registry started in 2003, no numbers have expired. If your phone has been disconnected or something it will drop off. Won't hurt to double check but should still be on there.

TX also has a Do Not Call registry that has been in place longer if that is where you registered you should sign up for the National list it will get you on both and there is no fee.

Without leaving your phone number they are unlikely to be able to stop the calling. They could even be trying to call someone else at your number so your name isn't even on the list just your phone number. Without it they can do nothing and the calls will continue.

Next time they call answer it and threaten to call the aterny general.. Or like my gramma does..Slam the phone on your table and swear violently.

The calls that just leave a message and tell you to call back are collection agencies. It is not necessarily for you. I have a very common name, and unfortunately I get these calls a lot, and they are never for me. The only way to stop them is on your message when you call back, if you know for sure you have no outstanding bills, is the leave your full name and phone number, and tell them they are calling the wrong person, that your birthday is such and such a date, or that the last 4 digits of your SS are XXXX.

These agencies seem to just call EVERYONE with the name they are looking for that is listed in the phone book.

I guess the only thing for me to do then is to either A)Call them and leave my ph# (which I am wary about doing)...
Why?! They already have your number! They can't very well take you off their calling list if you don't give it to them when leaving a message.

I agree that it's best to answer the phone and try to speak to a person though. But if that's not possible call back and LEAVE YOUR NUMBER! Leaving just your name does no good if they're looking for someone else.

Have you registered your phone # with the "Do not call" redgistry? If so, you can report them for teh continued calls-this registry really stops all nuisanse/selling calls-try it!

Yeppers! This happens to me all the time...because I am single female I only have my first initial listed in the phone book. So I get these calls all the time. I do have to call back and say "nope...not that person" and then it stops.

Good luck!

First off, I want to say thanks to everybody for their sympathy and their ideas.

I asked DH if he was SURE every single one of our medical bills had been paid. He said he was sure, but he'd go through them again for the last year or so and check.

It turns out there was one bill for a relatively small amount he 'accidentally' forgot to pay. Knowing him, he didn't accidentally forget. He put it off until he REALLY forgot and only remembered when we started getting phone calls. That's what I get for letting him be the financially responsible one.

Well, at least you know and can do something about it. We've all forgotten something before, and if you haven't, you will. Trust me, the forgetfulness comes with age. :(

Everybody makes mistakes!! :)

No it wasn't a mistake..DH does this all the time and it aggravates the poop outta me. He puts bills off until the VERY last day he can pay them without penalty.

He did take care of the bill first thing this morning though. I told him I wouldn't sleep with him until he did. The way to a man's heart is truly though his...um.. ;)
