woman, age 60
grew up in Vermont
only child
broiled chicken, boiled potatoes, and a veggie. rarely dessert
Summers we ate out more frequently, but we usually ate out at least once a week. Everything from hot dog stands to fancy restaurants.
Prices Dan put down seem correct. I do remember that take home pay was around $30 per week & both my parents worked. A week's worth of groceries was maybe $10 or so., at the local A&P.
Jeans, sweatshirts, boyfriend's shirts over a tee, knee length skirts, crew neck sweaters. Teased hair, permed, tried to have curls, but then straight became fashionable. Yea!
No dress code, but if anything was deemed really inappropriate you would get sent home to change.
Elvis of course, Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock, Fabian, anything from American Bandstand
started single dating at 15, before that it was in groups. Home parties were popular.
Weekend nights curfew was midnight. School nights was 9.
Disciplined by my mother with a "look" and she would tell me how disappointed she was. Boy that made me cringe!
I had my mom's car after I got my license. I would take her to work and pick her up. When I turned 18, my dad gave me an MG. Sport cars were very popular with the kids I hung out with.
I did a lot of babysitting for spending money, .50 cents an hour. And I worked summers in a drug store as a clerk once I turned 18.
Can't remember for how much.
Was active in Scouts, school activities like Band, took art lessons, and movies were a must at least weekly. Also loved to clothes shop.
We did have TV, got our first one in 1948. No cell phones, or computers though.
Favorite activity was reading and traveling(we did a lot of traveling!) When I was younger, I played with dolls and paper dolls a lot.
Hope this helps.

Roberta Blair Age 56

2. Where did u grow up? (state)
Massachusetts

3. How many children are in your family?
2

4. Describe a typical meal you remember having when you were young.
The four of us sitting at the kitchen table eating whatever my mother prepared.

5. Did your famliy go out to eat very often? Where did you go?
Rarely. My mother was a waitress and I don't think she enjoyed eating out all that much.

6. Do you remember what you paid for...?
A. A gallon of gas... 15 cents/gal when I first started driving in 1966!
B. A loaf of bread.... ?
C. A gallon of milk....?
D. A hamburger at a restaurant...15 cents 1966
E. A pair of shoes....?
F. A pair of jeans...?

7.Describe popular clothes and hairstyles when you were young.
While I was in high school you were either a mod or a rat. Mods wore preppy type clothes while the rats wore leather.
Long straight hair was in when I was a teen. Some girls were still into teasing their hair into beehives. Also french twists were popular.

8.How often did you family go shopping...And where did you shop?
Food shopping was at least once a week. The stores I remember were Kennedy's for milk, eggs, etc. circa 1950's and then Purity Surpreme and A&P, late 50's and during the 60's.
For clothes we had Lerners, Remicks (owned by the actress Lee Remick's family), Jordan Marsh and Filenes among others.
Our first Mall opened in the mid 60's (South Shore Plaza in Braintree, MA) The anchor stores were Jordan Marsh and Filenes. It had no roof for years and on the 4th of July they use to set off fireworks in the field that is now home to a Sears.

9. Did your school have a dress code? Describe it.
You could never wear shorts or pants to school and the skirts/dresses had to touch the floor if they asked you to kneel down. When I was in grammar school we wore something called leggins in the winter. It was a snow suit type garment that was made of the worst itchy material!

10. What type of music was popular when you were young? Also do you remember the names of some popular songs?
The first song I remember was called Green Door. As for singers, pre teen: Bobby Vee, Buddy Holly, Elvis. Teen years, the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion. These were the people who had the songs everyone was talking about.

11. How old were you when your parents let you date?
I didn't date until I was out of high school.

12. Did you have a curefew when you were around 16? What was it?
10 p.m. on the weekend unless it was something special.

13. How did your parents discipline the kids?
As a young child, I can only remember being spanked a very few times. When I got older it was mostly being grounded.

14. Did you get to use the family car very ofter whne you got you driver's license?
Yes, all the time.

15. What were some of the thing you did in you spare time?
Pre teen: I was outside a lot playing with my friends. Hop scotch was big as were hula hoops. We also use to do something called penny walks. You'd flip a penny and if it came up heads you'd make a right turn at the next street or left if it was tails. Great exercise and you never knew where you'd end up. BTW, I can't believe that just popped into my head. I haven't thought about that in years!

16. Did you have a job when you were a teenager? How much did you make an hour?
My first real job was at John Hancock Insurance in Boston. I was 17 and they had just raised the starting rate to $1.65 and hour!

17. List some things we have now that were not invented yet when you were young.
LOL! Just about everything we take for granted now! Not sure if these hadn't been invented but no one I knew had them. Dish washers, electric can openers, color TV, portable radios, VCR's, satellites, polio vaccine, cable TV, weed wackers, unleaded gasoline, gas powered barbeque grills, self defrosting refridgerators and, of course, the more recent stuff like computers and CD's.

18. What was your favorite childhood activity?
As a pre teen: Going over to my grandmothers and checking out all her really old stuff. I think that's why I still love antiques to this day.
As a teen: hanging out with my friends and just living life to the fullest!

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH AGAIN FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!!!
