Disappointed with SSR

I agree with the last poster about the sound machines. I bring a portable one with me whenever I sleep away from home, as I am very sensitive to unfamiliar noises. Steps in the hall or a door closing will wake me. White noise to tune anything out usually puts you to sleep faster too. It's great for insomniacs!

As far as SSR, we were there in June and didn't see any of these sound issues. I could barely even hear the fireworks from inside the villa. I am really surprised that you could actually hear the buses.

Is it possible that maybe the sliding door wasn't closed completely? If it is opened even a crack, you might hear noise from outside, but it seemed completely soundproof to me when closed fully--with the exception of being able to BARELY hear the fireworks if you payed attention and listened very closely!

BTW-Regarding sleeping, the sleeper sofa is excellent!

Sounds like the OP is in the minority with regard to problems at SSR. (As is usually the case with DVC complainers.) I look forward to staying there some time.:sunny:

So, because he is in the minority, he doesn't have a valid complaint? You were obviously in the room with him to judge the sounds of toilet flushing and air conditioner dripping with a objective decibel meter to be able to say "oh, silly complaint!"

I don't know if SSR is built more cheaply than the other resorts. Its possible that they are trying new things with each resort to keep costs down - SSR owners may be gloating how those drippy air conditioners no one but the light sleepers can here save them money on dues. Its also possible that if they get enough complaints, it won't be worth it for them to continue, and they may even make changes to what they have put in.

Weren't their issues with the air conditioner sensors at BCVs - they needed motion to work and who moved that much during the night? Weren't those eventually resolved?

Some people are more sensitive to noises than others. My sister, for example, is a very light sleeper and any unfamiliar noise will wake her up. I'm made from sturdier stock and can sleep with all sorts of noises, except of course my DH's thunderous snoring, for which I now use ear plugs. Great things, ear plugs. Now I don't go anywhere without them. I can hear the phone and the alarm clock, but it drowns out the snores... wonderful.... I've never tried the noise machines... I don't know if they would annoy me.... maybe I should try....

OKW has water table moldings at each floor break on the exterior and the downspouts have to jog out and back in to clear the moulding. The end result is a pinging sound as the dew and/or light rain drip down the pipe from the gutters and hit the section in the downspout that juts out. To a light sleeper this is like Theban Pebble Torture. It's only noticable in the second story MBR's in three story buildings.

I wonder if SSR has a similar setup that may be causing the dripping noises?

Where in my post does it say he doesn't have a valid complaint??? Huh, huh, huh?

You inferred what was not implied. My only implication, stated sideways, is that positive experiences far outnumber the negative with all the DVC resorts.

But now that you bring up the subject......:yo-yo:

I might have said it slightly differently with something like....

Just my 2 cents......

Word of warning...

I've had the flashing green light in other DVC units. Unfortunately it was too infrequent for me to track down and cover up the source. I suspect you have to be a light or restless sleeper to notice it... Since its green your eyes have to adjust thoroughly to the dark to see it. Usually its only a problem on day one...after that I'm so tired I go to sleep quickly.

We stayed at the SSR and had a great time. Its tough to imagine that they could not correct the matter but I hear what you are saying. What room and location were you in? We stayed in a studio and were fine with two kids and my wife and I. Where were you located. Sounds aweful but suprising.

Little piece of electrical tape solves this problem. Perhaps dripping can be easily solved as well.

Studios will not have the dripping noise as they don't have a washer in the unit. The noise is from the air conditioning unit dripping water into the drain for the washer. If you close your door to the laundry and close your bedroom door I can't imagine you can hear it.

If anyone's hearing is that sensitive I don't know how they sleep through anything, including air planes, neighbors, toliets, air going on and off, etc.

The only person I would imagine it would bother is someone sleeping on the couch. But then no more than the refrigerator cutting on and off.

Sorry, OneMoreTry, read your post as "aww, he's just a complainer." But that wasn't what you meant.

I agree there may have been more implication in the word "complainer" than I realized. I should have used the word "complaints."

Anyway, I do think this situation is a little like the Princess and the Pea. The complaints are legit, but there is also a heightened sensitivity involved.

I fully agree.

And its easy to have heightened sensitivity in a hotel room. I'm not the only person who doesn't sleep well in a strange bed. Even something like the bed facing the wrong direction throws me. And I'm not the only person who doesn't sleep well when overtired - nor am I the only person who gets overtired traveling to and experiencing WDW. Then, once I become aware of a drip, or crickets, or hubby's snoring - its really hard to block it out - even the next night, and sometimes a change of scenery is required.

Glad to see that someone else was disapointed with SSR. We stayed in August and likely would not stay there again. We found the one bedroom very small, and the whole place didn't seem as though the people who designed it actually spent a night in it to see what would work. Honestly, if this was our first experience to DVC, we wouldn't have bought 10 years ago. It is very nice looking, and I'm sure well built, just not what we enjoyed. Can't wait to get back to OKW. And I don't have 23 different positions on this subject.

I reported my problems at BCV during my July 2004 DVC trip, but I would never wish for someone else to have problems or ever BE GLAD if they did. You really did not mean that the way it reads, did you???

Rex, of course not. All I meant was that I thought we were the only ones who didn't care for it. I was 'glad,' if you you will, to see that there were a few others who felt like we did and that there were somethings that didn't agree with everyone, and that could have been done better. I hope that clarifies what I said.

I thought that these were the same size as VLW, BWV, & BCV ....
