Disappointed in... Cape May Buffet

We had an 8:35 reservation for dinner at Cape May last Saturday 8/26. We weren't seated in the main dining room, but were instead put in a tiny room with only a few tables that was near the dessert station. Although that location was less than ideal, we were excited about the unlimited crab legs and especially the Oreo Bon Bons. The hostess made sure to tell us to try them, as they were Cape May's signature item and it was the only place on property where we could have them.

However, when we excitedly went up to get dessert, there were NONE LEFT!! We asked our waitress if they would refill them and she told us that they had unfortunately run out, but that they could give us the recipe.

On top of that, the rest of the dessert selections were subpar and very mediocre, so we were SUPER disappointed.

I usually see posts on here with people complaining and think that they are overreacting, but it's a bit ridiculous to pay $40 for a meal and then have the restaurant run out of a signature item. Very disappointed in the whole situation... :(

I would be upset too!!! In fact, the Oreo Bon Bons is the reason i want to go back to Cape May!!! I was obsessed with them. That and the crab legs. I would be really upset too if I were you.

The rest of the desserts there ARE mediocre and not good!!

WE ate there for the first time last year and was disappointed also. Food was nothing special and even my DH thought it was just OK and he was the one we really went for. But the best was after we were only seated 20 to 25 minutes our server told us we can stay as long as we wanted but they really needed to table. WHAT!! I filed my plate 1 time and took both my kids to the restroom, I did not even have time to finish my first place before she said that to me. We will not go back...way over rated!

did you get the recipe? :cool1:

had that happen to us once a few years ago and we were staying at Boardwalk across the lake. I made a friendly complaint to the manager and (jokingly) told him I would be sneaking back in the next day for my Oreo Bon Bons

The next day we found a plate of them had been delivered to our room.

Another time at Cape May found some grit in the steamed clams. The chef came out of the kitchen and delivered a huge plate of to our table he said that he checked personally.

We went to Cape May on the 23rd and had a very nice dinner. Not too long a wait to get in, good server and the buffet was fresh and well stocked. Very sorry to hear about the poor experience. I would certainly think that making a complaint to a supervisor then & there would be the way to go.

I'm sorry you had a disappointing experience. We eat there every trip (dinner and breakfast) and we have yet to have a bad experience. I do agree that it is not good to run out of any food item, whether it be a dessert or a buffet item :sad2:.

We tried Cape May Cafe Clam Bake 2 years ago because of all the great reviews on the boards. Me and my DS LOVE crab legs and were super excited. We were disappointed with this whole meal. We too were seated in the small room to the right of the dessert bar. The clams and mussels were gritty and the crab legs smelled fishy. As far as dessert, I wasn't impressed. We will not go back again.:confused3

I agree their desserts are lacking. I tried the Oreo Bon Bons and so did my hubby, he liked them and I didnt (shocking I know!) :rotfl2: We went there because I am a huge fan of the crab legs. I thought there would be more options other then just clams, crab legs and carved beef. My hubby doesnt eat sea food so he mostly stuck to the bread, haha.

Uh oh. Someone's going to read this and three months from now there will be a complaint saying Disney is going downhill because they didn't get Oreo Bon Bons delivered to their room. I'm glad it wound up working out for you though, sometimes handling disappointment with a smile and sense of humor encourages people to go out of their way for you!

OP, sorry for the disappointment. I hate it when I go to a place for a specific thing and they're out.

We will be at Cape May on the 15SEP, DH, dS and me.... and I dont like seafood (figured I would eat the beef).... a prev post was in the same boat.... what if the crablegs are bad??? Should I try for another ADR at this late date??

We had dinner there last year for the first time and didn't really care for it, although we do enjoy the breakfast. Me and my DH always refer to that little room as the "naughty room" and always ask when checking in to not be sat in there. As for the bon bons, if they are the ones with the little chocolate Mickey ears, we had them last week at Chef Mickey's.

I'm sorry you were disappointed in your experience. We always eat there when we go. I love the food. The crab legs have been delicious whenever we've been. It's a bummer that they ran out of the oreo bonbons, those are really tasty.

They used to have a hot chocolate lava cake (mini) that was so delicious! If they still had that, at least then there would be another dessert worthy of the Disney name besides the Oreo Bon Bons!

Thanks for your review. It is very helpful. :)

More food for me!!:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Keep eating there! More ADR's at better restaurants for me!:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Cape May used to be a must do for us but our last trip was definately sub par. They kept running out of clams and every time I got up to the buffet there was a huge line.

The dessert's ALWAYS looked like locusts had just attacked it.

Really like the name naughty room! We ate there once for breakfast and it felt like we got seated at our local ho hum family restaurant where everyone takes there Grandparents for dinner. BORING. Why pay Disney prices if you don't feel like you are in Disney?

Love the name the naughty room...I guess because we were put in there, we were punished and not allowed any good desserts!! :rotfl2:

The funnier thing is I don't eat any seafood. I ate the landlubber stuff and was perfectly happy. I was also there at around 8:45/9pm in January so it was nice and peaceful. I can't imagine ever going back to someplace like Chef Mickeys because of the cacophony in that place.

Give Cape May a try. Any restaurant/meal should be given two chances. It's always possible that someone had an off day which affected your initial meal, but if it happens twice, then it may be not up to your par.

My DW loves seafood, and I am a vegetarian. She polished off 4 or so plates of seafood, and I actually ended up eating 2 full plates worth of the salads and other non animal foods. If no one in your party likes seafood then its not going to be worth it. But if someone does, then you should be able to find plenty of other options to eat.
