Disabled Daughte

Traveling to Disney with disabled daughter, need spacious accomodations due to lots of medical equipment; want trip to be magical, best location to go back and forth to hotel convenient to all. 3-4 people. Thinking of Boardwalk Villas or Yacht Club. Any advice? Any other hotel worth thinking of?

You should post on the DISabilities board! I'm sure you could get lots of helpful feedback from the folks there- they really know their stuff.

You should head over to the DISabilities board, where there are many many people who have done what you are about to do. They can give you lots of helpful hints and practical advice on how best to enjoy WDW within medical parameters.

My DD is also disabled but I'm not much help. Last time we stayed in our own travel trailer and before that was in a house in Ft Wilderness.

My DD uses a wheelchair and a special bath chair but besides that, we don't have a lot of extra stuff.

How old is your daughter, what things do you anticipate her enjoying the most? I would probably try and figure out where you will spend the most time and pick based on that. If she will probably enjoy the characters and the young child rides, then I would stay in a villa near magic kingdom. If she likes restaurants and firework and more gown up shows and learning about other countries than the Epcot are great choices.

Also is the pool an issue? How do you anticipate traveling to the parks. If you will be driving anyway then maybe the Animal Kingdom Villas. There is just so much to see there! But if you're doing Disney transportation it is not a good choice.

She is 21, developmentally disabled with CP and neuromuscular condition with weak resp. muscles. She loves all things Disney. The issue is we have massive amounths of medical equipment, so we need something spacious and someplace easy to return to during the day for breathing treatments. It's an emotional trip for us, as she nearly died 4 yeas ago and now is stable. This is the time to make the trip if we are going to do it. She does love Mickey and can't wait to hug him. The trip is mostly about character breakfasts, shows, things like that, and some rides not too hard for her. SHe went years ago in between some major surgeries and remembers it to be the happiest place in the world. We had strongly considered Boardwalk Villas due to the easy location and the space of the rooms, and also thought of the Yacht Club, although I don't know if they have rooms spacious enough. I have called Disney and they have not been helpful, as they say "all their hotels accomodate disabled,etc." but they are really not guiding us as to the best place for our daughter, location, space wise, etc. I would love any and all advice. it is so great that you are able to do this for your DD! I hope you have a wonderful trip amd amke great memories. I would also say the DISabilities board it the best place for your questions. There are poeple there who have "been there, done that" and are a wealth of information. Good luck with your trip!!

How much square footage are you thinking?

Will she need an accessible shower?

Several of the resorts have accessible rooms with zero entry showers and additional space to maneuver. I believe either Boardwalk or Yacht Club (and maybe Beach) have them. Would a cottage at Boardwalk be big enough?

It sounds like you are on the right track with the Boardwalk area. I am not sure what your budget is but the 2 bedroom villas sounds like it would give you what you need, plus it has a full kitchen it in. Yacht Club may not have rooms big enough but the Beach Club Villas will also have 2 bedroom units.

What a wonderful milestone to came back after nearly losing her! It sounds like Magic Kingdom might be her favorite. I wonder if Bay Lake towers would work really well. I have never been there but I know they have two bedrooms with a queen and a sofa bed. You could have that be her room and you would have the space where the sofa opens to put her equipment. You would also have monorail to two parks which means quicker access and character meals right there if she's too tired to go back to a park, plus you could hop on the monorail to get to things like O'hana's or the character meal at the Grand Floridian.

If it was in your budget you can also get a view of the park. A breathing treatment on the balcony looking at the castle might seem a little more magical.
