Disabled Camp Sites at FW?

We're camping for 16 days in FW in Feb. I requested to be in a preferred loop so I can access the settlement easier. I was wondering though - can someone tell me if there are handicapped sites in the loops? Ones closer to the washrooms and facilities? Or is it just luck of the draw. I realized it doesn't do me much good to be near the settlement if the showers are miles away - lol. We're in a rented trailer so I'm not sure how well the layout is actually going to work for me.

I know there are H/A designated cabins at Fort Wilderness, with an exterior ramp and accessible features inside.

However for camper or tent sites, I'm not sure any are H/A sites since there really aren't any features to make one "site" more accessible than the next. The equipment that your party uses on the site may impact accessibility depending on your needs. Most campers/RVs that I've seen as rentals have a toilet and shower, albeit a tight space. Will you be able to do the steps up into the rental unit?

I would suggest asking on the Camping Forum as to sites or loops with closest proximity to the comfort stations and buses. Then call-in a request and state your reasons (wheelchair needs access to comfort station, etc.).

your typical camper will not be handicapped to the point of needing special facilities. the cabins are permanent structures so fall under ADA. the sites are 'bring your own gear' so you would-be responsible for providing all necessary DME or accommodations.

I do know the comfort station has a handicap bathroom and shower, but most if not all campers have steps to get in and out of and most of them are small.




most loops are close to the bus comfort station with a 5 to 10-minute walk ( the normal hook up are the furthest away from the bus ( internal) and you can get any where in the fort with the bus system

In state parks, the ADA sites are paved and have paved paths to the bathhouses. At Fort Wilderness, this is the case for every site. The entire Fort is paved, with the exception of tent pad area, but the drive is paved on all sites. Even the tent pad area is accessible to wheel chairs, as it's not dirt, but solid material. All bathhouses have ramp access and ADA showers and toilet stalls. You can request sites closer to the bathhouse, but none are very far away. Basically, the entire Fort is ADA accessible, no reason to have special sites.

Have been camping at FW since they opened in early 70's and I don't remember ever seeing any specific handicapped sites. They are all very nice - cement pads, etc. so not sure what you would want to be different. You could ask for a site closer to a restroom, otherwise your camping facilities would be up to you.
