Dis mechanics?

Well dropped my car off at the mechanic this am at 9am. They kept it ALL day. They said they can't find anything really wrong with it and they were not able to reproduce the noise it makes for me every single day. I have a long commute, 1.5 hours each way and I am terrified of getting stranded. Here is what is going on:

After driving for about an hour or so if I turn my car off (like to run into store or fill up with gas) and then start it back up it shakes and sputters something awful. It has a really rough idle, but it does go. And when it does this, it won't really accelerate well it is sort of delayed when I step on the pedal.

I honestly do not think my mechanic even drove it. And of course, now I have another whole week of commuting before I can bring it somewhere else. My dad is out of state but he thinks it might be related to the fuel pump? Any ideas?

Not a mechanic but I will take a stab in the dark. It could be the fuel pump, clogged fuel filter or clogged fuel injectors. What year, make and model is your car?

What kind of car? My husband says it sounds like an ignition misfire.

Sounds EXACTLY like what my old car used to do. It would shake something fierce and want to stall if I didn't keep pressing the gas. It also had the delayed acceleration, and it always felt sluggish.

It was a bad O2 sensor.

The mechanic DROVE it and couldn't tell at first.

I just ask my DH (he's a journeyman at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer for 26 years). The first thing he said was "what kind of car?". Then he said that it sounds like it's the fuel pump. The way that he explained it is that the fuel pump is drawing too many amps once it's shut off and restarted so it's not drawing at the proper pressure.

2004 Chevrolet! Thanks for the input. I am so afraid of getting stuck on the side of the road.

Sounds like a fuel pump, I just had my replaced a few months back

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. Nephew's Mitsubishi had very similar symptoms.
