I know exactly how you feel. I had a REALLY bad haircut when I was 12. It was the first one that I went and had done all by myself and paid for it myself. It was horrible. The woman wasn't even paying attention to me as she cut my hair because she was too busy talking to the woman next to her. She actually cut my bangs on a sharp angle from one side to the other, with the short side ending up about 2mm long!!!

I nearly died.

Of course, as a 12 year old girl. I didn't know what to do, so I just went home and cried.
After that, I started cutting my own hair. I kept it long, usually in a ponytail and I just trimmed the top. I did this until I was 30 years old!!
A few years ago, my friend and neighbor, knowing how I hated having a ponytail everyday (especially at 30), convinced me to come with her to a hair appt and meet her hairdresser. I did and I loved her. She was a wonderful, friendly person. While she cut my friend's hair, we talked about different things she could do with mine. Afterwards, we looked at pictures together. I made an appt with her a few days later.
For the first cut, we didn't do anything drastic. We cut down the length to my shoulders and cleaned up the top. It looked very nice. She told me that she was very honored that I trusted her enough to cut my hair.
I now see her every 6 weeks. She has since opened her own shop in her home (which makes everything MUCH cheaper). We've now got my hair cut pretty short and layered and we've been experimenting with colors. We had been foiling it for awhile with different shades of blonde and sometimes red (I'm a brunette) and recently we did an all-over color of a reddish brown.
I am so happy with Donna as my hair dresser and I would never go to anyone else. You just need to find someone that you not only like, but trust as well. I hope you find someone like I did.
