A while back during a thread like this, I corrected 2 of MY repeated spelling mistakes. They were:

alot: It's actually 2 words a lot

definately: Someone pointed out a tip: Think of the word FINITE: So it's definitely .

These 2 bother me. And here's a couple of others I notice a lot:

Appalling : I have seen this spelled appauling more than once.

Also, in a sentence: I wish I could of/would of done it differently. It's actually I wish I could have/would have done it differently.

Blame it on the St. Joe nuns. I just notice things like this. That and I'm sick of reading American Idol threads!! :D :D :D
And I watched it!! LOL!

How about you? What spelling errors do you notice frequently?

The could of/would of mistakes drive me crazy all the time!

I have a hard time with the word oppurtunity (did I spell that right?) I could probably think of more but nothing else comes to mind right now.

Also another common error is with further/farther. People tend to say, "I drove further down the street." when the correct word to use is "farther". A teacher told me to think of it this way: If you're talking about distance, if it's far away it's farther. Further means to explain in greater detail. I would like to further explain to you my reasons for this.

I would be very happy if people could get loose and lose figured out.

What drives me crazy is the misuse of then and than.

Then there is there, they're, their.

To, too and two.

Sister St. Ephraim would be so pleased!!!

I think a lot, all right (not alright) and their/there/they're bug me most. But then again I ought to hush up as I am dyslexic and can't spell to save my life most of the time.

You've hit on a real pet peeve of mine. Spelling and Grammar errors

The absolute worst is a spoken (and I've seen it written) grammar error I hear all too often. It is like nails across a blackboard to my ears. It is:

"I seen..."

How can someone possibly think that is grammatically correct? I manage a dept of people at work... and I have 1 employee that says this multiple times every day. How do you correct an adult that has been saying this her entire life?

Another:

irregardless

IRREGARDLESS IS NOT A WORD!

Ok another: undoubtedly pronounced Undoubtably

I could go on and on. My employees think I should've been an English teacher and they know better than to send out a letter or email that hasn't been through spell check. :o

One that bugs me at school with the kids. They will say that they "fount" their book, instead of found. I guess we all have those words that bug us the most.

Oh I am SO glad I'm not the only one. I don't care how grown up they are, as long as I know the person, if I hear them make a grammatical error, I will correct them. I do this with my mom a LOT! It really gets on her nerves and makes her mad. I don't do it to make her feel stupid or anything, I'm doing it so she'll know how to say things properly in the future...you know, so she doesn't look bad in front of people. She really gets mad at me when I correct her about A driver's license. Now, I say, "I had to go get it [driver's license] renewed" and she'll say, "I had to get THEM renewed" Why them??? What makes her think a driver's license is more than one thing I'll never know, but she refers to it as a them all the time and it DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!

One that has been popping up a lot is ... Niagra Falls. It's Niagara Falls. I think Viagra has confused many people.

It's and its. Use "it's" only when "it" can be replaced by "it is". "Its" is the possessive form of " it".

Check instead of cheque. I think that this has become acceptable now, though.

I'm in my 40s, and it has always been spelled that way.

"I wrote a check at the store today."

This is a cultural difference.

Canadian's spell:

cheque
centre

American's:

check
center

There are several words like this, and is not considered incorrect spelling on either side of the border :)

Although I know this rule, I do not like it!!!

It reminds me of another one....

I imprint Christmas cards. When you sign The Smith's, that is NOT correct. It should be plural not possesive .
Therefore, your Christmas card should be signed from The Smiths. Or just avoid the whole issue and use The Smith Family !!!!

Possessive

Sorry... couldn't resist in this thread :)

cheque is the French form of check, just like color/colour and center/centre. Check, color and center are all acceptable forms of spelling those words in the English language.

That reminds me...accept and except and effect and affect. Man I hate those words. As a Court Reporting student I also have to say that it is VERY hard to hear the difference between those words. Not only that, I can never decide which one is which!

Actually we would spell "check" as if to check your spelling and "cheque" as if to write a cheque. They are two completely different words with different meanings and spellings.

I notice that many people don't know the difference between your and you're. I will, however, remain mute on this subject, because it is a moot point.

I correct grammer constantly. It's gotten to the point that my friends wait for me to make a mistake so they can jump on me for it -- but at least it's got them learning some grammer! :p

My biggest is your and you're.

I didn't realize we had a spelling bee going on around here.;)

My worst spelling mistake I see? When I try to log onto to the DIS, I miss key my password about 90% of the time. That bugs the heck of me.;)
