My mom had a carotid endarterectomy in September and about three times a week she throws up at supper. She begins to eat and then throws up. She says she feels like something is stuck on the way down.

She usually has cereal for breakfast and a toast for lunch- I know not a great meal. At supper I cook meat, potatoes and a vegetable. She always eats supper with us. Sometimes there is no problem and she is able to eat, and other times she throws up. She is not losing weight.

She is on high blood pressure meds, Lipitor, asa and anti-depressants.

Anything to be concerned about??

Thanks!

of course! For quality of life if nothing else. Perhaps her Dr can refer her for a swallow evaluation. Perhaps there was some nerve damage from the procedure. A good speech language pathologist should be able to rule out many organic/structual causes.

Yes, I would be concerned.

cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome

Indications for emergency general practitioner referral to the vascular unit:

Recent carotid surgery (within weeks) and
Hypertension + persistent headaches and/or nausea and vomiting
Seizures (general or focal)
Focal neurological signs (e.g. hemiparesis or dysphasia).

I would place a call to her doctor.
