Last night just before bedtime i was seeing bright flashes of light. i thought maybe it was some kind of reflection so i stuffed my face in a pillow with my eyes closed and still saw it. nothing hurt but today i have a throbbing headache. any ideas?

You had the warning signs of a migraine and now you have the migraine. Good luck! I always take my medicine when I get the warning signs and then am usually able to avoid the headache.

The fact that you had bright flashing lights, it went away and then you had a severe headache suggests that the lights were a prodrome to a migraine headache. If your headache was located on just one side of your head, this also further suggests migraine. Another possibility when you see bright flashing lights is retinal detachment. That's an opthalmological emergency and if other things lead to that suggestion, floater, curtaining of your vision, blurred vision or a blank area in your visual field, you need to seek medical care for that imediately. I am guessing from what you have discribed however, migraine is the answer.

I agree, migraine. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks, OP. I think your migraine has rubbed off on me, and I almost never get a headache. Usually motrin helps, but I am stuck at work without any.

Migraine. Try to stay out of the sun today as much as possible. It's hard to recover from a migraine when it's too bright.

It could be a migraine, but also consider getting an eye examination. You might want the eye doctor to check your retinas to make sure all is OK there.

thanks everyone. :goodvibes i do get migraines, quite often in fact. but usually my aura is much different then what happened last night. although it makes sense. unfortunately i have much work to do today, and even though i'm goofing around on the DIS now, i'm off to work shortly. hopefully it doesn't get worse.

Definitely migraine. The flashing lights sensation is called scintillating scotomata. Hope you feel better soon!

Migraine!!

My DS gets the same thing. His migraines are so bad though that he throws up, has pain so bad that we are in the ER for shots....nausea and pain. You're lucky that you can somehow still function!

Sounds like a migraine aura to me. I usually get a rainbow effect in my peripheral vision (like looking at an oil slick out of the corner of my eye), but sometimes I get the flashing lights. And sometimes flashing lights (like strobes) will trigger a migraine too!

I get that once in awhile. I've found that if I take a couple of Motrin as soon as I see the light, it wards off the headache.

I would not hesitate to seek drs advise as there are many types of headaches for different reasons.

DH occasionally gets what was dx by opthamologist as 'ocular/retinal' migraines. About 20 minutes of asst shapes rainbow lights, then a dull headache for a couple hrs. No rhyme or reason and thankfully not often or bad enough to require meds.

Sending you good luck :shamrock: . I suffered years debilating migraines and since dr presc. B/P meds some yrs ago thankfully been set free of the demons!!! :goodvibes

This is how migraines start

I get this every once in a while, looks like big pieces of glitter, at least to me. I never get a headache awards?? Maybe I'm just seeing things, lol!

Are you very nearsighted? I would consider an opthalmology exam. Sometimes flakes of retina look like glitter.
