Hi All,

Laura wanted you to know that she is in the hospital being treated for colitis. She says she's thinking of you.

Take care,
Dan (her husband)

Dan, please give her my best wishes. I hope the docs get things under control quickly. Thanks very much for letting us know so we can include her in prayers. If you are able, give us an update so we know how it is going.

Thanks,
Laurie

I swear I posted yesterday and it's not here :confused3

Oh goodness, I had noticed laurabelle's absence! Sending best wishes for fast healing!

Snappy...prayers for you and everyone in the path of the scarey-looking Katrina!!!

Thanks for keeping us posted, Dan. Laura is in my thoughts and prayers.

So is everyone in the path of that awesome storm.

Awww, that's lousy!! Thanks for letting us know, Dan - very sweet of you. I wish we could send her cards!! Dan, is there a way? Let us know. :grouphug: to Laura.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. We have a full house of friends and family from new Orleans and lots of supplies. We expect hurricane force winds but not the 175 MPH winds they'll get on the coast and possibly in New Orleans.

Even the power company spokesman expects us to lose power for at least 4 or 5 days. We do have underground wires/cables in our neighborhood. I think that has helped in the past as far as the length of time the power is out.

Meanwhile we had barbecue shrimp for dinner last night and we are having veal tonight and steaks after the power goes (we are trying to use up the good stuff out of the freezers).

I am dreading losing the A/C, I dug out the fan I use in WDW. It is so hot and sunny today it is hard to imagine that within 24 hours we will have such a stong storm. It will probably be back in the high nineties after the storm passes and with no A/C I will be suffering with my hot flashes.

We have lots of ice, I guess I'll be drinking alot of cool juice.

This is so right on if you haven't seen this it is worth the time

My new battle cry: I had b/c but it didn't have me! (Where is the smiley with the upraised fist when you need it)

today my younger daughter asked me a whole lot of questions about chemo and what happens when I'm done with chemo.

she's mad at the cancer.

when I told her I didn't know what happens after I'm done with chemo, she said "you shouldn't get yourself into something unless you know what you're going to have to do..."

and then she made jokes about "you don't have cancer, your doctor just wants to torture you."

:rotfl:

that's why I love my baby, she always finds a way to make my laugh.

Lessa... :) how old is your daughter?

snappy...take care...how far north of the city are you??

I'm beat...we took DD back to UNH today... :faint: so I'll catch you all tomorrow!
GAGWTA!!

Oh Snappy, stay safe. Will be praying for you!

Dan, thank you for the update.

Snappy, if possible let someone on here know how you weather the storm so they can post and tell us. I'd be glad to be your contact person. Stay safe.

The news looked better when I woke up at 4 am. The pressure readings improved, the winds went down a little to I think 150 mph and the north western quadrant is breaking up as it goes onshore. I think she turned a little further east too, better for us and for N.O. We are about 70 miles north of New Orleans, also on the far west side, by the Mississippi river.

We are having a lot of wind, small twig type debris is everywhere. We secured all our plants, lawn furniture, basketball hoop post yesterday. Not many folks on the road. We obviously still have power, a lot of people in B.R. don't according to local radio. Ours may not last long, it has flickered. We have a whole lot of trees, in our yard and throughout the neighborhood but the power lines are underground. Schools are out at least until Wednesday.
No work today.

Our neighbor lent us a generator (Sams had sold their last one when DH went to get one yesterday). Hoping we can keep the fridges going anyway.

We have lots of ice, batteries, drinks, non-perishables as well. Also, the bathtubs are filled with water in case we lose water pressure.

We went to three stores yesterday until I found some battery operated fans, got one for each person here. It is going to be hot without a/c. I don't think the generator will power that. I just can't handle the heat and after the storm is over it will go back up into the upper nineties, we will be miserable.
I feel sorry for the people in the superdome, without A/C and possibly with out potties they will be far worse than us.

The worse thing is knowing how bad New Orleans will be. Last night my friend who lives 800 feet from Lake Pontchartain watched the coverage all night, she was sure she was not going to have a house after this is over, the news looks better this am. Still will most likely have water damage but maybe she will at least have a structure standing.

Worried about another sis in law and her family who stayed in Slidell.
They decided not to evaucate, she and her husband are not in good health and really had a hard time when they evacuated to our house last year during a storm. They are on high ground, on a ridege but close to the Pearl river. The storm sort of veered off that way. Hope to hear from them soon.

I gotta get away from this window, I am watching the tree limbs whip around.

Thanks for your prayers. It looks like the worst case scenario is not happening. Not over yet but it could have been far worse. I am just glad we no longer live in the city (we lived in Metairie west of N. O. for 17 years until 1999).

I'll post later if we don't lose power soon. Not much sleeping going on around here. Mostly, eatting and drinking. I am going to gain 10 pounds this week I don't watch it.

GAGWTA!!

I've got two daughters. my older daughter will be 15 in november, my younger daughter is 13.

the conversation I posted about was with my younger daughter.

ladies...I've got a problem, and your input will be welcome.

my 13 year old -- the one who's mad at the cancer...

she's a highly motivated student, always does her work, cries if she gets anything less than a A.

she was given a summer reading list. they had to read Lance Armstrong's "It's Not About the Bike", and then they had to read one of three novels on the list. there will be a test the first week of school. school starts next tuesday.

dd read one of the novels and loved it.

but she won't read the Lance Armstrong book. I suspect she'd rathe rread all three novels on the list than have to deal with Lance and his cancer.

what am I going to say to her?

I understand how your daughter feels. I myself have to stay away from reading cancer stories sometimes, even if they are "positive".

I don't think I would force her to read it. Have her read one of the other novels in addition to the one she's already read. Be prepared to send a note to the teacher explaining why she had difficulty reading that particular book right now if you're comfortable with that (I think it's good for the teachers to know what your family is going through but it's a personal decision). Hopefully the teacher will understand. In the meantime maybe you can talk to her about Lance's story and make it interesting enough so that she'll want to read it and perhaps be inspired by it? Maybe look at his website?? Good luck.

snappy, thinking of you and hoping you and your family are safe in this awful hurricane. :grouphug:

Lessa, I agree with Pea-n-Me - let the teacher know what's going on. Our teachers always ask that parents let them know if something going on at home might affect school, whether it's a death in the family, illness, whatever. My boys were in 5th and 7th grade when I was diagnosed, and I made sure to send a note in to their teachers letting them know what was going on. You never know how well your kids are handling your cancer. And from my own standpoint, I could be having a super-wonderful day and then I'll read something or someone will make an innocent remark, and I'll just get all depressed, "cancer is going to get me", etc. I'm not sure I'm expressing it right, but I think you know what I mean. I'm sure kids are the same way - they'll be so sure Mom is going to be ok, and then something will make them think maybe not.

Amy, I know exactly what you mean and I agree. Reading something sad or scary by accident (or on purpose) can change my whole mood for a day or more. :(

My kids had literally just started KGarten when I was diagnosed and one of the first people I shared my news with was their teacher. She was one of my blessings that year! I asked her to keep an eye on how they were doing in school and to let me know if she thought they needed to see the school counselor or anything like that. Saying goodbye to her at the end of school that year was a "tear fest" for both of us. I always felt they were in such good hands when they were at school. :sunny:
