Yeah, does someone have a Cliff's Notes to this thread so I can understand all the hidden messages?

Ho! Ho! HO! Who has been sharing the IP's of the North Pole?
harv.jpg
Not me Santa, I would never share IP's with anyone.

Well, everybody now knows who is on the naughty or nice list! That information is personal and confidential and never should be shared with others that are not from the North Pole!
harv.jpg
Oh Santa, I .. I ...

You, my least favorite elf, are banished to the Island of Misfit Toys to make retainers for all the misfits until you have learned your lesson.

Oh No Santa! Not the Island again!

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p
betz!!! Confused but entertained.:teeth:

Okay, is someone making the accusation that anyone from the DIS gave out personal addresses? If so, state your case.. . but if this has to do with issues from other sites, then let's knock it off, okay?

Thanks. .

hmmmmm ..... I am just parodying the post in general.
It seemed like a silly thread that needed a sillier answer.

Not aimed at you Betz. . :)

Of course, if one chooses to start a bulletin board, then you must confront the whole idea of censorship. Around here I accept the admonition: Pete's House, Pete's Rules. If I were to start my own site, I'd go about things differently.

Eros - I would love to see you start a BB!

Since I have retired I am very interested in learning how bb's work.

Is it possible to get someone's real name and/or address (or failing that ISP) from a board moderator?

If I take objection to a post and "report it to a moderator," does the moderator notify the original poster of my complaint. Does the moderator tell the original poster who made the complaint?

How do you handle posts that are personal "potshots" at other members of the board?

Thanks.

OK, I re-read the original questions so see what the big deal was... still couldn't quite figure it out, but maybe I will try to answer with JMHO of course....

From what I understand about most BB formats, moderators or administrators can usually see the IP address of a poster, but only their real name and info if the user includes that when they register. I think it depends on the hosting website/software you use but I am not positive.

If someone contacts you as the moderator with a complaint, well, if it's your board I would guess you could set your own policies. I would recommend keeping the complaints confidential but it would be entirely up to you.

The same goes to how you handle "potshots" - as the moderator or administrator of your site, you will set the tone for what is acceptable or not acceptable...

The above is of course, just my opinion, not necessarily applicable to the DIS or any other place. Seems to me that if you decide to start up your own BB you set your own rules, of course, within any rules or guidelines of your hosting service if you are using one.

What kind of BB where you thinking of?

Okay, as a mod I will answer the original questions. .

1) No, I do not have any sort of access to anyones profile, real name, home address, PM's, etc. I can can check IPs here on the CB, but no other board, and all that's good for is to check to make sure someone who's been banned isn't back causing more problems under a new name. . and 99% of the time the WM's are aware of the situation way before I would have a reason to check anyway; and no, they are not given out to anyone. . .

2) No, if the "reported post" involves a valid complaint or issue that requires saying something to the orignal poster, I do not ever say who made the complaint. If this has happened to someone, then I would suggest they bring it to the attention of the WM's.

3) As far as "potshots"; that covers a very wide range of situations, definitions, options; etc. and WM Michelle explained it as well as possible.

I can say in general that we are aware of most everything that goes on here, and if not, someone will clue us in quick. While I may not know every detail of every cryptic remark in this thread, I know enough to say that the DIS is not the place to bring this stuff, and if anyone has what they feel is a ligitmate complaint, write it down and send it to a mod or a Webmaster, and it will be dealt with.

There's been far too much of this lately, and it needs to stop.

Eros if you ever start a BB I really hope I get the link:) :) :) :) I think interesting would be an understatement of your board:) :)

So at Eros's site, would it not be Eros's House = Eros's Rules?

Just an observation--censorship comes in many forms. At least Pete's censorship rules serve a purpose, i.e., he is trying to keep his board family-friendly.

I've seen other boards that use mockery, ridicule, and belittlement to censor and control what people want to say. And in those cases, there were no apparent reasons for it, other than to be controlling and bullying.

You need to get out more, Eros, if you think the censorship on the DIS is so bad. At least there is a honorable reason for it here.

Okay, I do believe we have exhausted this subject. . . :)
