Since I have retired I am very interested in learning how bb's work.

Is it possible to get someone's real name and/or address (or failing that ISP) from a board moderator?

If I take objection to a post and "report it to a moderator," does the moderator notify the original poster of my complaint. Does the moderator tell the original poster who made the complaint?

How do you handle posts that are personal "potshots" at other members of the board?

Thanks.

because you're retired and want to understand how BBs work, right?

Moderators can see the ISP addresses of posters on the boards they are resposible for, WM's, all the boards. Real names and addresses are not any more available to them than they are you and me. Only available through hear-say or if actually posted somewhere.

A 'report to moderater' elicits a look at the subject posting, and if, in the opinion of the moderator/wm, it warrants some action, the poster is asked to make changes or the post may be edited or deleted. When I was doing it in the past, I would always get back to the person who reported it, with a 'report' of the action, or inaction, taken, as well as the poster, if I needed to do some action. The poster should not be told who complained, no point in that.

Potshots=Personal attacks? :confused:

Um....I do believe that's what she said.

I consider a "pot shot" a subtle way of personal attacking; the ones that get by the censors. I've seen it many times, not only here, but other message boards as well.

People responsible for "pot shots" know exactly how to get their message out, without looking like it was a direct personal attack, but that is JMHO. I guess the best way to deal with the person making the pot shot is to e-mail or PM them asking what their motives are. Ofcourse, I wouldn't necessarily expect an honest answer!

I would certainly hope that info from profiles like addresses, phone numbers and also the person's ISP is not shared by anyone that has access. To me that is equal to a breach of confidentiality similar to that in a doctor's office.

But, again, that is JMHO.

MarlasMom, are you thinking about starting a BB?

:D

MM, I would caution against having your own BB.

All it takes is for a few bad apples and you've got a mess on your hands. One that's impossible to clean up no matter what you try.

I wish you the best if you decide a BB is something you want to try your hand at.

I don't get it, do you want the mods to give you somebody's address? Somehow I doubt that will happen.

No, we do not have anyone's name or address, unless they have posted it.

Yes, we have access to the IP of posters.

Reported posts are handled in a variety of ways. It is up to the discretion of the moderator as to how to handle it. Not every reported post gets yanked. The moderators follow the guidelines of the boards and also their own good common sense in dealing with reported posts.

No, they do not tell those whose posts were reported who reported them. They will generally let a poster know if their post is pulled and why, but there are times when posts are pulled without notification, such as if they are a blatant violation of the guidelines.

Personal attacks are handled as directed in the board guidelines. Again, part of that it is subjective, but the moderators do an excellent job of keeping it balanced.

My experience is different I guess. When I reported a post the information was forwarded to the offensive party. I know that because I quickly recieved the PM the moderator sent to that party, forwarded to my user name here.

So I guess the answer is, sometimes??? Perhaps when you report a post you find offensive, you have to be clear if you do not want to be identified.... just speaking from my experience anyway.

marlasmom, I think if you decide to start a BB, keeping it private is often a "safer" method... only invite those you feel you can trust anyway. :) unless you like a lot of conflict that is. I'd be happy to give you some suggestions or examples if you wish to PM me.

But then it's often hard to figure out exactly who you can trust.:D

Ain't that the truth :D

The eye rolls are not necessary...

cripes.

Can't someone express a desire to form a BB and to get info on how to operate one without smart remarks?

There are so many wonderful BB's out there...Disney related, sewing related, smoking related...and anything else you can imagine.

It can be very fun if you gather a fun crowd but it is a lot of work so don't underestimate the time it takes to set it up and administer to.

It has been my personal experience that whenever a mod edits or deletes a post that I've made, I've received a PM from the mod or WM saying something to the effect of "Your post on (fill in the blank) thread was edited because (fill in the blank)." Only twice have I ever been told who complained, and in both cases it was because the mod/WM was editing out information that the complainant felt was personal, and thus should not be on the board.

In both cases, I would have known anyway, since I knew who the information was about, so getting the info from the mod/WM didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.

Quite truthfully, I rarely to never respond to the "report this post to a moderator" emails. We have mods here that do a much better job of that than I would, for sure. The email comes up with the person's email address who reported it, the post in question with a link, and the person's response as to why they feel the post should be reported. Nothing personal like names and addresses, and if there is an IP address attached to it, I sure haven't a clue as to where it is. Nor would I know what to do with it or why I would want to do anything with it if there were.

Marlasmom...are you checking out pay BB's or free ones?

They both have their positives and negatives.

Also there are boards and forums dedicated to the actual operation of your own site or board. Look into those for a boatload of great ideas and suggestions.

Good luck. It can be a lot of fun!

:)

This is one wierd thread.
