I think Dish Network tried to 'slam' me today. Someone claiming to be calling from DishNetwork wanted me to sign on to their system. If I did, they'd give me $600 worth of their equipment and I'd get service for XX amt. of $$. I told her I had DirecTv and, she said that's why she was calling me. That Dish HAD bought out Direct and that, by Sept., I'd be FORCED to sign on with them and BUY their equipment! That's when I said NO!!! No one will FORCE me to buy or pay for any TV/satellite system/equipment, etc! She wanted me to hear her 'short' speal! I again said NO!

I called DirecTv and told them what had happened and, the lady explained a merger was IN THE WORKS, but NOTHING has been finalized and, if/when it is, it'll be 9-12 months away! AND, that IF the merger takes places, the DirecTv name is more popular and well-known that, it'll probably STAY DirecTv, even if Echo/Dish Network are the actual owners. ALSO, if the merger is approved, I was told that any equipment change would be at Their Cost!

I think Dish network is doing some underhanded dealings right now! I have reported it twice, by phone and, by email.

Don't fall for this!!

BTW, for those of you with caller ID, the call came up "New York caller" - 212 area code. I've saved it to possibly send to the Illinois Attorney General's office, I'm thinking Class Action!

I'M comforted by the info I've learned but, I fear for ALL those customers who might get taken in by this ploy.

I have heard about the possible buyout, for a while.
Why would you need new equipment? That would be silly...

Just the way telemarketers work unfortunately....

EXACTLY Cindy B but, I wanted to warn some people who might get taken by this devious scheme.

Sure does sound kind of strange...Not sure if this is related, but we have Dish Network, and the other day received a letter from them with 2 certificates for friends, stating that with the certificate, they can get up to two receivers, a dish, and free installation. The catch is that they are obligated to a one year's subscription of programming(can be the basic minimum @ $22.99)

Of course, in the very small print it also states that "Other Restrictions Apply"....I don't intend to find out, either.

we have Directv and have had it going on two years....we have the major box and then three others....so I would not want to have to purchase more equipment.....this was enough....I will be on the look out....believe me....thanks for the heads up...

That was just a local business using strong-arm tactics. I don't think Direct TV is sponsoring any such initiative.

Heather, it wasn't DirecTv doing this at all! It was Dish Network. And, it wasn't local, it was a call from New York. The true info I did get was from DirecTv. (If it WAS local, I'd be getting a call from AT&T broadband, our ONLY cable provider locally)

I just wanted to pre-warn those of us with DirecTv to NOT buy into the Dish Network's gimmick right now.

:)
