Direct TV - DVR

We're considering purchasing a dvr through Directv our provider.

Are they worth it? We mainly were thinking of it for on demand.

yes we like ours but sometimes we have problems with the hidef.but its great for saving shows and taping one while watching others.

Yes we love ours. Once you go with DVR you cannot go back to regular TV. We love being able to tape our shows and fast forward through commercials. I do recommend the TIVO DVR over the standard one though as the programming has a better interface and easier to use.

FYI the $99 "normal" DVR can be used to receive HD signals by downloading a software update that makes it exactly the same as the $199 HD-DVR. The 800 number won't tell you this, of course. It is pretty new, though. Found out from an installer a couple of weeks ago.. AFTER we bought an HD-DVR (lease, really... to buy them costs over $500) and he came to install it. So he updated our old regular DVR, moved it to the bedroom, and now we have two HD receivers.

I do agree with the PP - once you go DVR you will never want to go back. DVR is by far greater than sliced bread.

I have to call Directv, they charge $99 for the receiver, but are charging a lease fee?.? What's driving me nuts is our neighbor threw out, yes I said threw out her dvr from directv, and her boxes and dish and went to cable.

Sometime next year, DirecTV is supposed to start offering a new HD DVR running TiVo software... it might be worth waiting.
