If I buy say 50 pts directly and then 250 resale, are all of my points restricted or can I book different resorts because I do have a direct contract? We were members at one time and sold our pts a few years ago and I'm kinda sorta thinking about buying again.
Thanks

Each point comes with whatever restriction with which it was purchased. So the 250 resale points would keep resale restrictions.

You can use your resale contract to book at the first 14 DVCs, but not Riviera or anything built after it. You can use your direct contract to book Riviera, the original 14, and any new ones.

Unless I am wrong, you would need to do the resale first if you only want 50 points direct. Disney won’t allow a “first time” owner to purchase less than 50.

Also, I would struggle to find a benefit to buy in planning to only buy 50 direct, unless you needed that small amount to fill out your needed point amount and couldn’t find it resale. Or if you wanted the small amount to stay at RIV, or future resorts, but 50 wouldn’t get you much at RIV, nor would it get you direct benefits.

Correct. New buyers must purchase 150 to become an owner.

Once you own, even resale, you can add on the 50 points…some of the older resorts even allow 25 point add ons if paying cash.

When we became DVC members years ago, it was possible to buy a 50 pt contract. I did not realize that DVC had changed to a 150 pt minimum for new members.

Happy though that resale would allow us to stay at resorts other than Riviera. In the past, we stayed close to the main parks - BWV, BC,BLT. Once when a friend came with me and brought her 5 yr. son, we stayed at AKV but not being able to walk to the parks was not something that appealed. I can see why others love AKV though because it is a gorgeous resort.
