Dinning Plan Credits

I hesitate to post this but as there was a big and heated discussion before I left about how credits were allocated and such I thought I should report my experiences with the plan.

Just to confirm there are not such things as adult or child credits. I asked at the desk when we checked in and at a few places we ate at. Everything is lumped together and as I was told I could use them anyway we wanted to do. I could for example go over to the Whispering Canyon Cafe and buy dinner for 28 new friends (We had 28 Table Service Credits) or buy meals one at a time at 28 different places. The only restrictions were that they be used by midnight of departure day. No where on any reciept or any report I asked for from the front desk did the word adult or child get mentioned.

Now as to why Disney lets this "loophole" exist I have a theory. In our case we were there for 7 days and we maximized the use of the plan. Not so much with kids meals but with sharing counter service, getting refillable mugs at WL to use for lunch drinks at the resort so we could get bottled water for the parks with those meals, saving lunch snacks for later ect. Part of that was due to the heat and the need for water the other part was that there was so much food and a desire to maintain weight with eating 8 sit down meals. (We paid for one out of pocket and yes, we did maintain weight). It got to the point that we would order 2 CS meals for lunch and 1-2 for breakfast to split. The breakfast platter was huge at WL. We ended up spending less on food at Disney than we did at the Orlando and Philly airports on our way back.

At the same time some other people joined us for two three nights. They arrived late on the first night and left early on the last day. So in essence they had only two days to use three days worth of credits. They had no clue and not much was explained to them on how the plan worked. Until I talked to them about it they would have been content using only 2 TS credits, 2 CS credits and no snacks. (They didn't like the snacks on the plan and didn't grasp the concept of getting bottled water as a snack. Instead they bought it.) They didn't understand that you didn't loose them each day. So for every overly analytical person that uses the plan to its max I am sure that there are several that don't. Heck, I couldn't believe that they didn't understand it. Of course they also didn't join us in being at the parks when they opened. Sadly I am related to them.

So anywho credits are just that credits. Child and Adult credits only exist on the pages of the National Inquirer with Big foot and I do not see Disney changing the plan to over complicate it when most likely for the small percentage that use the loophole there are most likely more that don't use the plan well. Even with the Internet I knwo a few people going to Disney, some well educated computer literate people, that would never think of using the Internet to plan a vacation. For that matter DW as asked me not to talk too much about how I planned our our trip. Something about geek and over planning as if that is possible. :rotfl2:

Thank you for your report. Others are coming back saying they shared TS credits without batting an eye. So now I will not feel guilty pooling credits and sharing meals in 25 days!

:goodvibes

thanks for your post, we have decided to split our cs credits into 2 meals for the 4 of us to share ! we also have 1 extra sit down booked and i plan to pay oop for the children on two meals :)

Same here. I actually have two plans on how to spend the credits (using the same number of ADRs). One plan for how it is now, another just in case it were to change.

Not to stir the pot, but we did have something interesting/different happen at Alfredo's. At the VERY beginning, before placing any orders, the server asked if we were on the Dining Plan AND asked to see our Key to the World card. I also noticed he did this to a family right next to us and noted that they were listed on the Card as "Four Adults". On our Key to the World card, it stated "Dining 02 Adult." Now, if you are going to split meals, I think that is fine, but I'm guessing maybe they did that to make sure people were not ordering four adult entrees if they had two adults/two kids? (The kids next to us were close to the cut-off ages.)

But, you are correct, meals are not only not distinguished between adult/child, but they are grouped by ROOM. I thought this was interesting b/c apparently the server at LeCellier was not aware of this. She argued with the table next to us about it.

All I can say is THANKS :flower:

Thanks so much for the info Pedler! I hope you enjoyed your trip....

Especially loved the part out being an overplanning geek (not us!!)- I get that too...You can actually see the glaze come over DH's eyes when I get started! :rotfl:

They're not broken down by room but they can only aggregate 4 guests on one meal account. If you have a group of 5, 4 guests will have their credits pooled and the 5th will be on their own card.

We were just at All Star sports(Aug28- Sept3) and we had two rooms for 5 of us. The credets were broken down by rooms(our kids 11,13,14 are considered adults on the dining plan) My husband had two people on his card and I had 3. We had to hand in both cards when we ate. At the end of our stay they gave us separate statements for both rooms.

My brother was at PORFQ. Three in one room and the parents in the other room. The three kids and one parent was on one card and the other parent was on another. They can only pool 4 guests on one card. I guess resorts differ on how they handle it.

just because my (i mean OUR) trip isn't for 353 days???

I agree that the loophole may loose them some money on the few guests who use it, but they more than make up for it from those that don't. In our case we shared a couple of meals with our two girls or paid for a childs meal out of pocket. That made for an extra table service meal on the plan plus one paid for out of pocket by Sil. With all the TS we didn't use all of our CS. We also didn't use all of our snacks. We had planned to get some water and snacks for the road but forgot when checking out. We grabbed a few sandwiches for the road with extra CS but still had some left over. We just didn't eat as much with the heat and then the big meals.

So, if I'm correct in reading this, I will be able to use my credits to pay for my parents' dinner even though they are not on the dining plan? It is myself and my 2 sons going to Disney (2 Adults/1 Child). My parents are joining us for dinner one night. Can I use 4 credits to pay for the meal (and pay cash for my youngest child) even though there are only 3 people listed on my room key?

When exactly is the deadline for using the credits? We are staying for 7 nights & 8 days. Can I still use the plan on that 8th day? Thanks!

(We only have a 7-day park hopper. The last day we're going to DisQuest & will probably start the drive home around 3 PM.)

Yes, you will be able to use your credits on your 8th day. Dining plan credits expire at midnight the day of check out!

I'm not so sure you could do that. Particularly at Alfredo's where they asked to see the card prior to ordering to check how many people were on the card/party. Wherever you are planning to dine for that meal, I'd probably double check with that specific restaurant in advance.

& not to beat a dead horse :) , my DH & I are traveling with DD8, DS8 & DD8. The cut off for children's dining is 9 years old. If one of my 8yo's (who look almost 9yo) chose to eat off the "adult" menu, that's ok because #1: they look 9yo & #2: there are no adult & child credit breakdowns? I, too, am a "planning geek" (the line forms here) :rotfl: and I'm sure I'm obsessing over nothing. Thanks!

That does contradict what we were told. We originally had our two 9 yo as children on the dining plan, but paid an extra $40 per child to have them listed as adults so they could order from the kid's OR adult's menu (our kids love steak and shrimp and we wanted them to have more choices).

They specifically told us at a sit down restaurant (not necessarily a CS) we would HAVE to order from a kid's menu if one was available if they were listed as children on the dining plan.

If what you are saying is true, we just wasted $80 upgrading them to adults! :guilty:

Your card will say 2A3C. Actually the card can only handle 4 guests one of you will be on another card. There aren't any adult or child credits but if you order 3 adult meals it will be evident that a child is ordering an adult meal which is not permitted. In this thread it sounds like the restaurant in Italy is checking for this. Some restaurants may care and some may not. I don't know what the waiter would say if your DH said he wanted to eat 2 meals.

Thank you Lewis - that's exactly what I was trying to point out. That is the only place they asked to see our cards, and I'm assuming it was to check to see if you how many adults/children were listed on your account. For example, I could have had One Adult/One Child listed ,and then I do not believe they would have allowed us to order two adult meals.

It seems to me that you can use the credits however you like, but within one meal you have to abide by how many adults/children are in your party. In othr words if you card says 1 A/2 C and another is 1 A/1C - you cannot get five adult meals. However, you could get 2 Adult meals here and 2 adult meals at the next restaurant. At least this would be the case at Alfredo's would be my guess. I would not be suprised if others followed suit.
