has anyone ever done this during dinner, or is it just a complete no-go with people waiting for 'Ohana?

If you go really early when Ohana dinner is just starting (say around 5) it won't be so crowded, but otherwise you will definitely have to wait for a seat in the bar service area, and it gets very crowded, noisy, and busy. It is doable, but I would suggest Trader Sam's Terrace or the Oasis pool bar instead.

Haven't tried it but hanging around with all the people waiting for 'Ohana would not be fun for me. I think you could dine at Kona and access any menu items from the Tambu Lounge.

Trader Sam's has a good bar menu, so I'd head there if Tambu is full, even if you need to eat on the Trader Sam's terrace. I'm pretty sure you can carry your Lapu Lapu wherever around the resort. You'll miss out on the bread pudding though.

I was also looking at something that would appeal to my son and the Tambu menu is def more his speed (pulled pork nachos, lol). Actually I was in an all out panic about what looked like CA Grill changing formats based on their online menu but it has been confirmed that they are same as always so I will stick with my first plan. We are staying at the poly an the Tambu menu looked good for both myself and my son but I have never seen a relaxing table there, always packed with people edgy over 'Ohana running late... BUT we could totally get the bread pudding and bring it back to the room or have it later in the night!

That's possible but most WDW facilities don't have "to go" packaging. No reason you couldn't bring some paper plates if they can't accommodate. DW loves bread pudding but is not an 'Ohana fan--we might have to try this ourselves. :earsboy:

If the pulled pork nachos sound good, you should stop by the QS Captain Cook's at the Poly and get theirs for either lunch or dinner.

Do they also have the bread pudding? If so the "to go" issue would be resolved as it's easy to carry out from most QS.

We went around 6pm for Ohana Bread pudding only. We are returning this year for more of the same. It was very casual with plenty of free seats, we were served quickly and the dessert was delicious of course.

Hi Lisa! I've really enjoyed dinner at Tambu Lounge (pulled pork nachos, in particular!) a couple times. Once was with a friend when we were there for a conference and the other was with my husband for a quick mini date night when staying at Poly with the kids. Both times, we started at the bar (because no tables were available) and then moved to a table when one opened up. I really like the tables alongside the bar in the corner - much less hectic than the main area in the GCH and great views. Our youngest is also on the spectrum and that "corner" area would be ideal for him. On the other hand, I know he would be agitated if we planned to eat there and then it was too busy or we couldn't get a corner area table. So I'd probably tell him Plan A is Tambu Lounge and Plan B is Captain Cook's (really like the outside patio area.) Either way, as a previous poster mentioned, the pork tacos are still on the menu!
