We are going in May. Has anyone heard when the dining surcharge for peak season will be in effect?

According to several CMs last week, it's June 13 - Aug 13. Disney hasn't officially announced it yet, but the dates and prices are loaded into the Dining Department computers. You can also do a check by booking an online ADR for some place like CRT, that requires payment on computer. Before you get to final payment, you can cancel, but this way, you will see the actual upcharges/surcharges in effect. Make sure you do 2 different ressies: one for a non-peak period, and one during the summer, where peak period is in effect. They are $4.00 + tax/adult and $2.00 + tax/child.

This is the first I've ever heard of a dining surcharge. Does this apply to anyone eating at Disney World between the previously mentioned dates? Is it something that pertains to the dining plan? I made ADR’s for my upcoming July 4th trip and a surcharge never came up, unless it’s in the fine print. Any information would be appreciated. :confused3

Nope, it's not in the fine print. Disney has implemented this upcharge/surcharge the past few years, and they don't really make mention of it. It's for buffets, all you care to eat and fixed price meals such as: CRT, Boma, Tusker House, Chef Mickey's, Garden Grill, etc. You can find out from these boards or All Ears, for example, or, when you actually book your ADRs by phone, as CMs will review prices with you and will mention the upcharge/surcharge. If you book online, then you won't find out, unless you do the trick I mentioned above.

I have sent emails and called Disney about it, but this is how they do it. It ensures that they get their money - if you don't know about it until time of payment, you really have no choice but to pay, right?

They should be officially announcing the dates soon, but as I said, the prices have already been loaded into the computers for awhile now. It's not a good system, and isn't fair to the guest, but this is how Disney does it.

If you are going during July 4th, which is peak season, you will be subject to the exact price upcharges per meal/per person that I mentioned above if paying cash. If doing the DP, then Disney has already made a peak dining price of $46.99/adult for this time period, so you are covered in that respect.

IF you're on the dining plan, there's no need to worry about the surcharge for peak times, it only applies to meals paid for out of pocket. I'm not enitrely sure when the surcharge applies, but you can call dining and I'm sure they have the information for you. I'm suprised it goes that far into August though...the last time we went in August (2008), we went from 8/10-8/21, and that was solidly value season/no surcharges still....I guess their early August attendance has really increased since then!

this does not apply to all meals, it applies to buffets - there is a list - let me see if i can find it :)

found it

Seasonal Disney World Dining Information
During seasons of high demand, Disney raises the prices at most of the prix fixe restaurants.

Below are the restaurants where you can expect to pay more. On average, it's $4.00 more per person ages 10 and up, $2.00 more per child ages 3 -9.

Restaurants:

1900 Park Fare
Akershus
Biergarten
Boma
Cape May Cafe
Chef Mickey's
Cinderella's Royal Table
Crystal Palace
Garden Grill
Hollywood and Vine
Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner)
Ohana
Trails End
Tusker House
NOTE: This list is subject to change without notice and does not exclude other dining venues.

The DDP in past years was nitimpacted. This year, Disneyhas raised theprice of hte DDP to match the periods of increase

It only affects some restaurants - buffets and family style. Here is the info from last year from All Ears:

Seasonal Pricing Returns May 24 - July 12, 2009 at these locations: 1900 Park Fare, Akershus, Biergarten, Boma, Cape May Café, Chef Mickey’s, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Crystal Palace, Garden Grill, Hollywood and Vine, Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner only), ‘Ohana, Trails End, Tusker House. Prices will increase $4 for ages 10 and above and $2 for those 3-9.

Last year, the dining surcharge ended about the time value season started for the deluxe hotels. It looks like it will extend into August this year.

DW and I are a couple of dinks so we're generally not into family style or buffets so I think we're in the clear, and helps explain why I was uninformed about this. Thanks for the info! :)

Sorry for not including the types of restaurants it applies to - thanks for that. I updated my original post.

As I mentioned, you can call for the actual dates and the prices as that info has been loaded into their computers for months. Disney is just slow to actually let public know about it.

Happy eating, Tiger :)
