Has anyone been able to get an appetizer instead of getting dessert? We have ADR'S at WC at the WL, coral reef, yak and yeti. Anyone been able to do this at these restaurants?
I don't like not having this option. I'd much rather have an appetizer to split and a dessert to split. Hopefully they will see the light one of these days.
I think that it was done this way by Disney because the powers that be feel that guests will pay for an appitizer OOP more often then they would pay for a dessert after eating a big meal ... so, more $$ spent by guests.
Also if people could split an appetizer and then split a dessert it would mean their meal would last longer, hence they can't seat as many guests per night. I've never heard of anyone being able to substitute either- it's the dessert or nothing. Several times we got a muffin to bring back to the room for the next day's breakfast instead.---Kathy

That's the reason why they don't give you the option - because you'd order both and split them. They want tables turned over faster and offering only two courses takes less time.
I have read some reports saying that they allowed them to have a milkshake as their dessert. So maybe they would be able to serve it at the same time as the entree? I suppose that could be one option if they would do it, if you didn't feel like having a piece of cake or something. Personally, I love having dessert when I dine out and when DH and I go out to eat we normally skip the appetizer and get dessert instead so we have enough room. Big sweet tooth eaters here, especially when it comes to chocolate! However, I am willing to pay OOP a little to get an app if it is something we really want to try. Disney knows this...that is why they have the DDP set up the way it is. The only way to have the app included is to get the deluxe plan, but that is way too much food for us and would cost way more than paying OOP for one or 2 apps on a 10-night trip.
WCC at the Wilderness Lodge has the AYCE skillet which includes salad I think. And you still get a dessert on the DDP as part of the TS credit. Any buffet or AYCE family-style also has salads and other appetizer-type foods.
Just last night we did a detailed accounting of our expenses from last month's trip and planning for May's dining. We did a graph of what we spent using the TIW card last month and seperated out the tips. Then we made a chart for the DDP and added the tips there. We only used the restaurants we are planning to eat at in May, so we should get a good detailed accounting of cost. Well, imagine my surprise when I learned that our "bill" using only the TIW card and cash came out to almost $200 LESS than using the DDP!!! We find we almost never use the counter service credits anyway, and we also hardly ever get dessert, but we do enjoy appetizers.
I was all set to sign us up for the DDP again until we did this little excersise! Now I'm thinking the DDP is not ever really going to be a "deal" for us again. It certainly is more convenient when you have kids along, but I KNOW we will always come out ahead paying OOP with the TIW card now.
We had decided before our January trip that we were going to keep all recipts just so we could do this little comparison, and I'm glad we did!
