Dining plan without room

Is the only way to get the dining plan at Disney involve booking the resort room through Disney? I ask because I wanted to book a room at Animal Kingdom Lodge through Orbitz, but wanted to then add the tickets and dining package. Can I not do this at all or can I possibly do this when I go to check in at the resort? Thanks?

All Dining Plans are part of a package sold by the Walt Disney Travel Company (and also available to DVC members staying on points). As such, you must book through Disney (or DVC) to purchase a plan.

They also must be purchased at least 72 hours before check-in (48 for DVC points).

Edit: To clarify further, some Travel Agencies are able to book stays with a dining plan as well, but that's due to the way they book with Disney. Discount Travel Sites, etc are typically not the same.

So, in other words... if you book to Orbitz you will not be able to add a dining plan (or tickets ahead of time, but you can order those separately without extra cost).
