I have 2 quick questions...

If we have 2 rooms booked in December, can one room get the dining plan and the other room not?

Also one room is booked for 4 nights the other for 7 nights If both rooms have to get the dining plan, would the 8 day room have to get it for the full 7 nights?

Moot since you can get the DP for only one of the rooms, none of the rooms or both rooms. Your choice.

Not if you segment the reservation for the second room into two parts, and book the meal plan for just one part of it.

Thank you very much! That is what I thought, but I got nervous for a minute. Not that it matters this far in advance but now I don't have to worry about it at all.

Confusion about the dining plan. We have never used it before, but I would think it would be "per person" instead of "per room". I don't get it.

The Dining Plan is charged per person, but everyone in the room must be on the same dining plan (or no dining plan).

It's per person, but my understanding is that everyone staying in the same room (that Disney is aware of) has to be on the same plan.

This situation gives you a LOT of flexibility. You can essentially get it for 4 or 7 days (and not fool with the aggravations of segmenting) and for as many or few of the group as you want up to the occupancy of the the unit in question.

Looks like this might not even matter now.
DH and I are thinking of getting the TIW card since we have our AP.

Now to go do the math and see if it makes sense....

I bet it still makes sense to get the DDP for the core of your trip unless you're going to have more than one trip within the 12 month period.

We will be there in March and again in December.

I don't really eat enough food for the dining plan. We alwqys end up with extra counter service meals and snacks. When we are there for F&W the snacks go quick but otherwise i feel like the dining plan costs more money than I would normally spend.
I'm still not sold on the TIW though, bc I don't know if it will really save us that much, and while every little bit helps, so does keeping the $75 in my pocket. Haha.

I'm not trying to talk you into the DDP but it still may make sense for your situation. For sake of discussion lets assume you are there early in the day of the 4 night reservation. You can essentially get 5 days use out of the 4 nights. Given you have 2 rooms, you also have some flexibility in getting the DDP for those that would get the value of it and paying OOP (possibly with discounts) for the rest. The segmenting carries even more possibilities but seems to have hassle and risk.

One thing we've done on a couple of trips is to get the basic plan and let my the young adults staying with us use more of the QS options and we use more of the TS options. We usually shared meals (2 or 3 between 4 of us) for the non buffet type meals and the character meals with a soup or salad each and only get one drink plus water for the other.

Also, DVC members get discounts at some locations as do passholders, just concentrating on those options saves you 10-30% (depending) with no additional costs. Or you could eat off site, one can save a bundle with discounts including the entertainment system and restaurant.com
