I am not so sure about that. Someone HAS to be first at anything.

Of course the restaurant would have to hire top notch staff otherwise it would not work. I do not like the people who serve my food to also bus the tables because of cross contaminations and such. If you did not have tipping you could have staff to clear, staff to serve and then have someone who just walks around refilling drinks constantly etc.

You might miss out on meeting some excellent people one on one but you would also miss out on hearing waitstaff problems while your expensive meal gets cold. (am I the only one this happens to?? I have them sit down at the table with me)

The waitstaff would have a dependable income and possibly even benefits under such a plan.

Just my thoughts. I have plenty of them and I am at least 75% weird.

Not necessarily. Those kinds of changes often happen because regulation makes the old way of doing things no longer viable. Absent that, the only reason why something like that would ever occur is if there is a substantial amount of additional profit to be had. I don't see that forthcoming.

So the risk would be compounded by having a higher cost structure.

...And I agree with alot of what you say. Often when a 40 something single mom (in a diner) waits on me (& my $12 tab) in a pleasant & efficient manner, I might leave a 70% tip. (& I'm a sucker for waitresses who call me "hon").

And when a snooty waiter in a trendy spot waits on me (& my $72 tab) he/she might get 10-12% tip.

I don't know that there is an answer to non-disney servers getting a smaller %, but i do know that this is good info (for us) to have.

If i go to any of the restaurants mentioned on this thread and get good - great service, I personally will make up the difference & make sure they get a "fair" (to me) amount.

Hound 109, my husband is afeared that I might get in trouble for falsely advertising that I am "Slightly Goofy". Even have to agree that the later part is more apt than the former, which is greatly understated.

I have been known to leave a $100 tip for a $30 bill. (long story and not often repeated) but totally agree with you (having been a single mom myself) about rewarding good service rather than an overpriced meal. That being said I would NEVER go to a restaurant if I were not able to leave a tip as some do.

Bicker, you make some good points but I enjoy ruminating on how I would change the world. Never fear, I am powerless to actually do it nor do I particularly want to.
