We have an upcoming split stay- paying for first night and points for the rest of the trip. I didn't realize we couldn't do the DDP if we weren't staying on points , and wondering now if we rent points to use- switching that first night- could we get the DDP then?

I would just pay OOP for the first night and not worry about the DDP, maybe eat at a restaurant that doesn't accept the DDP. We don't find the DDP to be a cost savings anymore.

While the dining plan can now be added to a room only reservation (creating a "ticketless" package), there still seems to be a minimum duration restriction.

If it's cash through DVC MS then it's still counted as a points reservation. For all else, you likely can't in this situation and I wouldn't anyway. Remember you'll have access to your credits as soon as you check in to the new resort. So you could cover breakfast on the change day and going forward with the second reservation DDP. Just plan your choices accordingly, maybe a signature on the first night the has a lower value, or maybe somewhere off site or at Swan/Dolphin with a discount you want to try.

We were only able to get BOG on our first night, so it seems like a good use of DDP. But I guess not. Our first night now is not a DVC resort.

There are different rules for DRC/CRO and DVC regarding the ability to add dining plans.

Usually, you may only get a dining plan attached to a cash reservation booked through DRC/CRO by purchasing a room & ticket package and staying a minimum number of nights. Minimums have varied, but are usually not less than 3 nights. Occasionally, DRC/CRO offers a discount package that includes "free" dining.

DVC reservations (including those booked for cash through MS) may have a dining plan attached without the minimum stay requirement and without the ticket requirement. DVC never offers "free" dining.
