Dining plan available only with packages?

I really want to get the dining plan when I take my father to WDW for the 1st time in Oct. He will be horrified at the food prices, so I want to avoid this negative scene! However, I need to really watch expenses, so I'm hoping for a discount - was told they rarely offer them with packages, so I may have to do room only to get a good deal.
Is there any way to get the dining plan without doing a MYW package?

If you are a AAA member, I would check with them and see what type of package pricing with MYW Dining you you get for your traveling timeframe.
You do need a package to purchase MYW dining.
