Dining Plan and Diabetes

We've never gotten the dining plan before, it seemed to not be worth it for us in the past, but looking at our resies this year, considering how much we spent on food our last trip, and the fact that my metabolism has skyrocketed to the point where I can eat a massive amount of food, I think it would definitely be worth it this time around.

My only problem is that my dad has diabetes. He usually gets dessert with his meals anyway, maybe 50% of the time even though I try my best to stop him.
If he knows dessert comes with his meals it will be impossible to talk him out of it.

Advice?

Visit the disAbilities forum and look for the information on the Disney Special Diets stuff. You should be able to inform them of your father's condition and they should be able to make adjustments (sugar-free desserts, etc) specifically for him so he could eat his desserts without too much worry about his condition.

I am diabetic and was at WDW using the dining plan last week. Overall it worked just fine. At meals I normally eat either the bread/roll or the starch that is served with the meal, never both. I did the same at the Disney table service meals. For counter service, I would always try to substitute for the fries and usually were able to choose carrots or grapes. When I ordered a burger, I only ate the bottom half of the bun. A lot of times I ordered the salad option at counter service places. We did three character buffets. I always had salad and then sampled all of the meats. I let the potatoes/starches alone.

For dessert at counter service meals they usually offer a sugar free brownie. They aren't bad, but you don't want them for every meal. The other two options are usually chocolate cake or carrot cake. I typically got one or the either and had just 1-2 bites. For table service meals, there was usually a pretty interesting no-sugar option. I almost always ordered it.

We used a lot of our snacks for water. They also had some Goofy packaged candy that was sugar free that you could buy as a snack. You can also use snack credits for fruit or yogurt.

Overall, it worked well and my glucose levels remained stable. Normally, we don't use the Dining Plan and my Mom and I split a lot of meals. Overall, I think that plan works better for us. It's cheaper and you don't waste as much food.

I hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure every TS restaurant has a sugar-free dessert option.

I'm pretty sure every TS restaurant has a sugar-free dessert option.

Yes, and some are actually quite good! The Yachtsman has a delicious mango cheesecake and Flying Fish walnut crusted citrus laced cheesecake that is fabulous :cloud9:

Every restaurant will have something with no added sugar to offer for dessert... some are more creative than others... sugar free sorbet with berries, etc. If you don't see anything on the menu, then ask. Disney is very responsive to diabetics but you have to be a bit pro-active sometimes.

BTW, as a diabetic, I do the deluxe dining since I find my options are better met with TS than CS. I also like to be waited on!:lmao:

Hop on over to the Disabilities Board and you will find lots helpful folks with loads of great info :thumbsup2
