Hi. I am new to this board and trying to plan our first trip to WDW in May. I am so confused about the disney transportation system, that even after reading 3 travel books, I still can not picture how it works. My issue is mainly with ADR. In the books it says the buses can sometimes take as long as 45 min each way to your destination. I plan on having one sit down dinner a day and I assume to minimize my time on a bus, I should try to eat wherever I am located; but with 4 little ones in tow, I am worried that we will get turned away if I don't make an ADR. How do I schedule dinners without wasting hours on a bus/monorail/boat? Dining in the parks isn't bad, but it seems more expensive than in say, downtown disney. Also, I think we will be heading back to our hotel in the afternoon to rest up before returning at night so I am not sure if I should bother with reservations in the parks for dinner. I am so confused on how to make the most of our time, and manage to get a few good (healthy) meals in. Can anyone help?

Disney buses can be very time consuming. Getting to DTD, especially from one of the parks, is even more time consuming. You would have to bus to a resort, then to DTD. I would have a general plan of where you want to be on what day. If you really want to do a TS meal each day, you need ADRs. If you want popular character meals, ADRs are even more important. I would suggest having an ADR in the park you are in to cut down on travel time. If you are very flexible with where/when you want to eat and willing to travel to resorts, you can probably walk in, but it is tough to be flexible with 4 hungry kids.

I have 3 kids and have been going to WDW since the youngest was 18 months old. We generally do a few table service meals per trip, not one per day. My guys would rather be out playing in the parks than sitting and eating. I also find that having too many ADRs can make it difficult to enjoy the parks as you have to be watching when your time.

We use Disney transportation every time we go. One thing I wanted to point out is if you have kiddos in strollers, you have to get everything out of the stroller and fold it up to get on the bus. Usually not a big deal, but if you use your stroller like we do as a pack mule, it can be difficult to hold all the stuff and all the kids. Don't wait for the bus to arrive to begin the process of emptying the stroller

Take your time and enjoy your little ones. That first trip is magical!

First, Disney transportation works by having buses (all resorts), or buses/boats/monorails (Epcot and Magic Kingdom Area Deluxe Resorts) that go from each resort to each park. They do not go resort to resort. Thus, if you're staying at, for example, the Polynesian, and have a dinner reservation at one of the restaurants at a park, you would take the resort transportation to that park (eg. in hollywood studios). If you get to the Polynesian bus stop having just missed a bus, you could wait another 20 minutes for the next bus, and then take the 8-10 minute ride to DHS, and you're looking at 40 minutes right there. You could also have a reservation at the magic kingdom and walk right on to the monorail or boat launch and be there in under 15 minutes. (as an example).

Where it gets longer is having your reservations at another resort. So let's say, again, you're staying at the Polynesian, and you have dinner reservations at Boatwrights, which is at Port Orleans - Riverside. There are no direct buses from resort to resort. So you need to take transportation from your resort to a park or downtown disney, and then go to the bus stop for Port Orleans - Riverside. That's really where time adds up, and you could (and we did) see a 90+ minute commute for a reservation. (one tip - try not to transfer at Downtown Disney if you can help it)

One thing we try to do when we make reservations is have our table service meal at lunch time. This way, we're either in the park we're having it at, or we can take a bus from the park we're in to the resort we need to get to, shaving off the first part of the waiting and the commute to a park. Then we head back to our hotel for a swim or nap, and when we leave again, we're not stressed out about getting anywhere, we usually grab a counter service meal wherever we end up. That obviously can't work for everybody, but we've found that it does work for us.

You can also call for a cab to take you from your resort to another, if time is tight. The cab rides aren't expensive, but they do add up if you do it every day.

I know it's overwhelming, and with 4 little ones in tow, that adds more time overall. I know we've been late to a reservation at the Yachtsman (like 45 minutes late), because we got stuck on a bus that the driver was training on, and we called the resevervation line, and had absolutely no problem when we got to the Yachtsman, they seated us right away. That was, of course, before the credit card guarantees went into effect, so i'm sure that adds a new wrinkle. I would say budget in PLENTY of time to get where you're going, take a look at park hours before you make most of your reservations if you can, and try to decide what kind of schedule makes the most sense for you.

Thank you so much for this information. I am so glad you told me about the stroller having to be folded up. I will have a double stroller for our twins and we also use it as a pack mule! Lol. I was thinking that they had kneeling buses like we have in the city where you could just roll on, so I am very thankful that you told me that!
I am leaning more towards less table service meals and more winging it with counter service combined with hotel food. (We are staying at the dolphin and it looks like they have quite a few food options combined with Epcot and the Boardwalk.) I always have snacks on hand for the kids anyway, so I guess I will just try to relax about it. My new moto will be "We will not starve!"
Thank you again for your help. It also helps to know we can't hop from hotel to hotel, I didn't realize that either.
And DisneyBride....congratulations!!!! Disney would be such a fun place to get married. Looks like we will be in WDW around the same time. My son is a HUGE star wars fan...so Star Wars weekend was a must for us!! :)

Anytime! The nice part about the swan/dolphin is that you can actually walk to hollywood studios or epcot if you wanted, there is a beautiful, safe walking path that goes right along from hollywood studios and epcot and is accessible for you at the dolphin, as well as the Epcot area deluxe resorts - i love having that option!! Most people don't realize you can't get from resort to resort without transferring somewhere, and that's not a realization i'd want to make with 4 little ones that are hungry!

There's plenty of places to grab something along the way, so you definitely won't starve!!! Since you can walk to 2 parks or take the boat (the boat that goes to Epcot and Hollywood studios stops at the swan and dolphin), you really only need to worry about the bus for the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, which should make things easier on you.

The huge transportation system at WDW seems mind boggling when you read about it!!! But in reality?? It's really quite easy. Everything is very well marked and easy to use.
You've gotten some good insights here. Glad you found out about the need to fold up the stroller. The buses get very crowded, so that's a rule. There is just no room for unfolded strollers.

I would try to plan a few table service meals. It's great to get off your feet and relax for a bit. You're staying in a great area. Picabu in the bottom of the Dolphin is a great spot to eat. It's cafeteria style. But there are some great options....we've had some wonderful meals there. It's not cheap but you don't need to make ADRs there...just walk in. ESPN is also great, over at Boardwalk.
As far as it taking time using the buses/boats, yeah it does take time. I like to plan meals for the park I'll be at, or at a nearby resort. You have some great options in the Epcot area. Flying Fish at BW is pretty pricey. But, Captain's Grill at the YC is nice. And there is Goofy's Beach Blast Breakfast at the BC...really nice way to start the day...especially if you'll be at either Epcot or DHS that day. Or, you can just head back into Epcot, if you have park hopper passes, and get stuff to eat there.
Or, as you said, head to DTD, but I find it's really no less expensive to eat there. You do have Rainforest Cafe, and T-Rex there..both a ton of fun for kids.
Let us know if you have any specific spots in mind to eat and we'll let you know the best way to get there from wherever you are at.
And welcome to the board...we love seeing new 'faces'!! :woohoo:

OP--Be aware too that sometimes the buses are standing room only. So it is quite possible you may end up standing on a bus, holding onto your little ones and your stroller.
