Dining after weight loss surgery options?

I had weight loss surgery about three years ago, so it's nothing new, but I'm planning our dining options for our next trip and had some questions.

We are going to do some character breakfasts buffets and I definitely understand that for meals like that i will pay full price for the buffet option.

I have some questions about Whispering Canyon Cafe. The All You Care to Eat option just isn't economical for the little bit of food I can eat, but most of my part will take that option. I noticed on the menu they list some "enhancements" that are basically sides like baked macaroni and cheese or broccoli. Would I be able to order that by itself or be ablet o get the kid's meal option?

Probably not, unless you are a kid. You'll have to either pay the adult price or not dine from the platter, including the sides.

Oh, right. I didn’t mean I would eat from the platter but not order it, I just mean on the menu, it looks like you can get the all you care to eat option, or else order from the menu. On the menu, listed next to the entrees you can order, are a list of “Enhancements” that appear to be side dishes. I wasn’t sure if those sides could be ordered independently!

Your honesty is appreciated! But unfortunately not everyone is so honest.

There are entrees apart from the all you care to enjoy option at whispering canyon. Some places like Garden Grill don't have that option though

Yes, you can order just an enhancement. Or just an appetizer. Or soup. Or salad. Anything with a separate price - like the enhancements you noted - is available to you. Many adults have been able to order from the kids menu. Ask your server.

Just don't eat anything from the platter!

It's funny. On the official WDW website, the lunch menu has no enhancements listed. But they are listed on the dinner menu.

I had the surgery a year and a half ago and had no trouble at all ordering kid meals (not paying kid price at aycte, but you seem to get that!) or just ordering an appetizer or sharing with my son (at non aycte places). And actually when he ordered the skillet as a child and was the only one, the waitress had no trouble at all with all of us trying stuff off the skillet (she is the one who said to go for it, we didn't even ask - it was a lot of food for one kid and he didn't get any refills of anything). I think if everyone is ordering something they are not going to make a fuss about it (my parents and I all had our own a la carte meals at dinner.) I have been eating low carb for so long I need something with protein in it so I couldn't just order a veggie/pasta side, but I definitely tossed out some food in certain places when I wanted an entree and nothing off the kid menu or appetizer menu but that's not the same as ordering AYCTE without having the characters behind it. Honestly on vacation I just look at it as the cost to have a meal and it is what it is - it used to cost $28 for an entree to satisfy me before, and it still does... I just eat much less of it. I try to plan my stellar meals (like signatures) when I can bring leftovers back to the room because I can get 3 meals out of a typically sized signature entree and I find I am much hungrier with all of the walking (I am eating 6-7 times a day instead of just 3-4 like I do at home) and I appreciated having the substantial late night snacks when I got back to the room and was STARVING.

Also they are very willing to swap around sides with kid meals so you can kind of mix and match. I always rejected the beverage and dessert that came with it preemptively but I have read that some places will not allow the beverage and dessert for adults ordering kids meals. If I'm going to indulge in dessert it's going to be a good one and I can't drink while eating anyway so this is no issue for me.

I have not done it at Disney but I have had no problem ordering "enhancement" type things at other restaurants either... sometimes ostensibly added on to someone else's meal but honestly no one has ever batted an eye even when I just ordered it. One local place does a 4 oz lobster tail as an add on to meals here for $9.99 and I will often "add that on" to the larger order and order a side for myself (veggies or cole slaw or something) and for like $13 I have myself a nice little lobster dinner. I would not expect disney would be much different in that respect since they are fine with sharing, if someone else orders a meal you should be able to order an enhancement and eat it yourself. I have found in general that if you're a party with a bunch of other people the server won't bat an eye at stuff like that just because they are already racking up a decent tip. When I am alone with my son and I end up ordering $25 worth of food at a place where typically it would be double that if I ate normally, I will generally bulk up the tip a bit as if it had been a typical table.

Thanks, everyone! I am not going to stress too much about it, and it seems like if I have questions the servers won't be too put out to answer them, as long as I'm not trying to get reduced buffet costs or eat off someone else's aycte meal. Sounds good!
