Dine With an Imagineer

I totally forgot about this. My DH and I are going alone for the first time to celebrate our anniversary and would love to do this! You are so lucky to have scored this.
I had to rush over to WDW site and check for my dates :)

Congrats! Keep it and if your DH doesn't want to go, he can hang with my DH and we can go together :)

Hubby and I went on our honeymoon. He'd never been to WDW before so I wasn't sure how much he would enjoy it but... the day before they announced the star wars expantion at D23 and he's a huge star wars fan and our imagineer was working on the project so that part worked out great... what didn't work out great were our dining companions. Two families with teens/tweens who didn't seem to want to be there and certainly not for that long... and one 5 year old boy whose only words through the entire meal started out "I am Darth Vader" and never really moved passed there. ###Flame suit in place### I personally wish they would implement an age restriction on this and Dining with an Animal Expert as we had similar experiences at both... though at least with this one most of the kids were willing to eat the food - except Darth Vader of course (the kids at DwAE were at least more engaged)

I'm REALLY hoping we get someone who's involved with an area that he'll find interesting. I'm sure he'll find all of it interesting to some degree (he's constantly thinking of something random and then looks up entire histories because he gets curious) but I know he'll be absolutely at rapt attention if we get someone who is working on the new Star Wars expansion. He was like a kid watching the preview on the Disneyland 60th and he's very excited to ride Star Tours this trip.

And no flames from me. There probably are some kids who could sit through and enjoy an event like Dine with an Imagineer or Animal Expert but I imagine they are few and far between. For most I imagine it's not fun for the kids, it can't be fun for the parent who has to wrangle the kid, and it's certainly not fun for the other guests. Take advantage of the kids clubs--I bet most kids would have WAY more fun there for two or three hours than confined to a dinner table.

I thought I'd stop by with an update on how it went. We both loved it and found it worth every penny. Our Imagineer is an Art Director and a huge Disney fan herself. She seemed like someone who geeks out over the same things all of us here do. At one point she mentioned Joe Rhode and she seemed a bit starstruck (the rest of us starstruck by proxy). She said he's just like you'd imagine him to be and one of her favorite things is when she has to present with him.

Our waiter was also a wealth of knowledge and had many interesting stories and tips. The other guests at the meal were very friendly and respectful. My husband (who I was worried about) walked away highly impressed at the experience and wouldn't mind doing it again down the road.

The food was incredible. I'd never eaten at the Brown Derby and I can say with certainty we will be going back. It's funny that when planning meals my husband nixed all of the signature suggestions because he felt too out of place, that they were too fancy. He did comment that this was probably the fanciest meal he'd ever had, but he loved it so much that I'm sure I can get him to branch out a bit next time.

I'm adding a few pictures of the meal in case anyone is curious.

There is a 'guest book' in the lobby where artists who dine at The Brown Derby can leave a note/drawing. This was the FIRST thing we geeked out over: An Inside Out sketch by Pete Docter himself!

First course was a delicious tomato soup. Even my husband who doesn't like tomato soup loved it and talked about it days later. I've been searching fruitlessly for the recipe. I may have to write to Disney for this one.

Next was the famous Cobb Salad. I'd already mixed it up before I remembered to take the picture. SO good.

I chose the filet as my entree and it was perfectly cooked, so flavorful. I just realized my angle you can barely see the potatoes but there was a generous portion underneath the filet.

My husband got the grouper with lobster and devoured it. This is the meal that in the future I will look back and credit for opening his horizons to the Signature Dining options at Disney.

And dessert! Mousse, creme brulee and grapefruit cake. I'm not a fan of grapefruit so the cake, I fear, was a bit lost on me. The waiter mentioned his wife modified the recipe to use oranges so THAT I may have to try.

And a copy of our personalized menu (which I just realized didn't flip sideways like I edited it to do...hmm...)

They sent us off with a couple recipe cards.

And our souvenir plate! Now to get the little easels so we can display them.

In what comes as a surprise to exactly no one I highly recommend every Disney Park Nerd try this experience at least once.

Did you pay for your plate? My DS has gone twice and it was included. I heard that it was now extra and he is going in a couple weeks. Want to make sure he has enough $ if they do indeed charge for it as he wants to collect them.

No extra charge on the plate for us. It was included. Our final bill was $179.28 for the two of us after tax and tip.

Great, thanks so much! It's actually right on the Disney website where it says it is extra. o_O

Many of the Imagineers are involved with multiple things. The Imagineer we had was the curator for some of the attractions around the World. She was also working closely with Frozen marketing team. This was when the toys were first starting to hit the shelves, but a few weeks before the big marketing push. She warned us to brace ourselves, because Frozen was going to be impossible to get away from and boy, was she right. I think a lot of the experience comes with the other guests. We spent a good portion of the time talking about just Disney in general as a group, from rides, attractions, shows, resorts to movies, documentaries, etc.

I also made the mistake of ordering the noodle bowl and sitting next to the Imagineer. As delicious as the noodle bowl is, it was a little too "slurpey" for where I was sitting.

I know for a time the plate was extra with the DWAI Dinner at FF. When we did the lunch back in '13 at HBD, the plate was included.

When I did this the Imagineer was a structural engineer. She worked on Soarin' among other things. I still look for "her" bolts on the ride structure.

I always thought this would be a more private meal (as in an imagineer per party / group). I didn't realize it was a big group meal. How many people are there typically in one of these lunches? We've considered the Brown Derby before for a meal but have never been. DH would love this experience tho... Does anybody know if there is a discount for DVC members? TIA

12 plus Imagineer. No discounts that I've ever heard of.

It's limited to 10 guests (maybe 12, I can't remember the exact number). It takes place in a private dining room at the Brown Derby so it's just the Imagineer and small group. Ours made sure everyone at the table had a chance to talk and ask questions. There was no discount for TIW or AP when we went, so I'm guessing nothing for DVC. Very worth it though.

I found the price very reasonable for Disney and what you get. I think previously we paid $55-60 pp for the Fantasmic package at Brown Derby (3 courses). This was 4 courses PLUS the Imagineer experience and the signed plate for $70 pp plus tax and tip.

It is pretty private. It's 8-10 guests per day (we had 9) and you're in a private room in The Brown Derby. Our waiter mentioned that the Flying Fish dinner can be seemingly less private. Since they don't have the private room you get guests at nearby tables eavesdropping and sometimes flat out interrupting.

I'm also not aware of any discounts but as someone else mentioned it's really only a small upcharge on the "meal" for the experience. We were going to eat at the restaurant anyway so we figure the Imagineer and the souvenir plate (and name tag!) cost us maybe $30?

12 is maximum.....I've been 5 times now. Plate included all the time. It has gone from being clear glass then large black and now small black.

Oh, regarding the plate... our waiter said that the previous distributor who produced the plates (I'm assuming the original clear ones) stopped production with virtually no notice so Disney had to scramble to find a new one since they didn't have a chance to order a stockpile. Just in case anyone was curious as to the change.

12 guests plus one imagineer, each party does not get their own imagineer. And everybody sits at one table in a private room, not inside the restaurant. No discounts.

Flying Fish is closed, so dinner isn't there anymore and has been shifted to Citricos - which also has a private room, so I'd imagine that's where it happens.

I made a reservation for my dd's 15th birthday in September and it said that the plate was available for purchase.
