Well, I just got news that my company will be laying our department off (Moving the group/job to CA). Good news is that by law they have to give us 60 days from notice and per corporate policy they would give us 3 months pay worth as severance. A good chunk!

Now the dilemma... we planned to take our boy6 to DW during the Star Wars Weekend in June. Big Fan of Anakin! Soooo since we have not payed in full yet do we still plan on going (severance will pay for trip and have some left to put away) or cancel. I would love to take my son since he is only 6 once. However, on the practical side, if the market turns downwards and job market dewindles I may need that money to pay bills.

Or just say S#$% it, we really cannot predict the future and he is only going to love Star Wars for so long.

What do you guys think?

Sorry about the lay off :headache:

I would probably still go, although I'm not the frugal one, DH is. I guess if you can try to find ways not spend as much on the trip as you would normally..i.e. re-think the resort, or Dining reservations etc...

In any event, I wouldn't cancel yet...You may find something soon and it will be a non-issue.

What are your job prospects? If you expect to be out of work for a while, then I would skip the trip. If you can find something before the trip (you have quite a few months to look), then I'd go ahead and go! Disney will still be there when your finances are stable, and your DS has a lot of Disney-loving years ahead of him.

I wouldn't take a trip like that while still being out of work.

Still, I wouldn't cancel yet, because the trip isn't until June and you have some time to find work. As someone said earlier, it may turn out to be a non-issue.

Well... I have an interview scheduled for next week. From a company I did not apply to. Never happened before. Hopefully that is a sign.

I know he wants to go for Star Wars but what about changing to a cheaper/ value season. Will give you a little more time to pay for the trip and look for work. Also they now have the Jedi Training all year round and that way he could get some of his Star Wars kicks. Just an idea. Hope it all works out.

if you get a new job, would you be eligible for vacation time right away? most places have a delay in granting time off. perhaps simply postponing is an option?

Go! I've been there, and we STILL wish that we had taken a trip (6 years later). DH was laid off for 15 months, with about 3 months severence. Knowing what we did at the end, to be another 2k or 3k in debt wouldn't have made a difference. We wish that we had taken a trip about a month after he was laid off. Our spirits would have been much better. I had another friend whose husband was laid off, and that is exactly what they did - go to WDW.

BTW, it was 5 1/2 years between vacations because of that "financial hiccup".

So, keep your reservations, and see what happens. Even if you get a new job, many times, if you have a planned vacation, many companies will let you take the time off, esp. if you don't mind taking some unpaid time.

Good luck!

I would wait until after next week's interview, then cancel unless I got the job.

A trip to WDW, with airfare from CT, is a huge expense. That's several months of mortgage payments you're talking about, or a lot more months of groceries.

He has apparently been to Disney many times before. I would put the greater good ahead of the vacation.

When is the lay-off effective? In order to get your severance, I'm guessing that you will need to work until that date.

If you find another job, let them know the dates you need off for your trip. I have no problem hiring people that have something planned and let me know it. It's unpaid of course but that shouldn't be a problem for you if you land something and still have severence coming in.

You have plenty of time to cancel if you need to. I'd wait until March/April before I'd make any decision.

I faced this same situation a little more than a year ago. We had a trip for November 2006. In July 2006 I found out that my position would be eliminated as of September 30, 2006. We had already paid for our entire trip and with no job, no idea when we be going again. We decided that we would go ahead and go. I am working again and we are planning our next trip for November 2009.

T.
