Dilemma - getting a Great Dane, and my friend

The larger the dog, the shorter the lifespan. My sis owned a Russian Wolfhound-Borzoi-he was a joy, but lived a short life also.

I'd agree. My Saint Bernard was 7-1/2 when he died, but he was an utter joy every day of his life.

Just wanted to say :grouphug: to Stepdaddy. Having lost two of my elderly dogs last year, I feel for you. I hope your Baby is one that lives longer than average. :paw:

I think you should get whatever kind of dog you wish, and just let your friend know the dog will be crated, or out in the yard, or confined in a different room when she comes over if she is afraid. If she is the melodramatic type as you describe :earsgirl: , she will probably want to go on and on about how this will not be adequate, but I would not get into any huge, long discussions about it. Phobias can't be reasoned with.

Great advice from the dane owner and rescue. I have a dane that owns my family this is our second. Please can we not talk about life span it just reminds me that my time is limited. Our Brindle girl Harley is 5 and yes the time has flown by. :sad1:

And while I want to be considerate of her feelings, I don't think it's fair that her fear should dictate what kind of dog I choose as a pet.

Her fear won't, unless you let it. :) No one can dictate what you do with your life or family unless you let them.

You NEED to live your life and live your life to the fullest! Losing a friendship is sad, but losing a life long dream because you allowed it to happen is even sadder. And we don't realize that we allow our dreams to die until it's too late sometimes.

I owned two Great Danes and my brother owned two. They are lovable, loving giants. I had one Fawn (he was adopted as an adult) and my life long dream, a Harlequin (got her as a puppy). Neither of my Danes made the old age mark even though they were given the most loving, wonderful care. That's the only thing I don't like about Great Danes, their time with us can be wayyyyyy too short. :( Great Danes are beautiful, loving animals. I was very fortunate and blessed to have them in my life. :cloud9:

Enjoy YOUR life! It goes by too fast!

Get your dog, and put him outside or in another room if she's around.

I am not comfortable around large dogs, but I would never presume to tell someone that THEY could not get a large dog, for MY sake!

I do have one friend who has a big, rowdy, undisciplined dog that jumps all over me, and I don't like it much. But that's my problem, and I deal with it by inviting her out to lunch, or shopping, or to my house.

I think you should get whatever dog you want.
