Digital starter for an 8.5 yr old boy?

My DS(8), loves to play with my camera's....cell phone and DSLR. I'm think about getting him his own for Christmas. I was thinking: small-compact, rechargable batteries, and durable. Any suggestions?

Oh, and fairly reasonably priced.

Definitely make sure it has an LCD screen - that's the part the kids love most!

My kids use my old Kodak easy share. We use rechargeable AA batteries. I think the Kodak gets great color and takes fine pics; I HAD to move up to dSLR though myself for faster shutter speed.

Good advice. We got our dd an inexpensive kiddie digital camera a couple of years ago, but with no LCD, she really didn't have much interest. Kids expect to see the picture immediately--instant gratification. This year, for her 7th b-day, we got her a Nikon Coolpix L4. Only drawback is that it only has an LCD--no optical viewfinder. She loves it though. 4 or 5 mp (I forget) and 3x optical zoom, which is another feature I'd recommend. It was around $140. We also paid about $30 for an extended warranty that will cover it if she drops it and roller blades over it (which it just so happens I did to my cell phone a couple of weeks ago ). I usually decline warranties like that, but under the circumstances it seemed like a decent idea.

I am in the same boat. My daughter loves my cameras and has asked for her own for Christmas. I was actually looking at the Canon A530 or A540. It has enough mp for her and it does short movies (which she wanted). The A540 has a larger LCD. The A540 is going for about $170 and the A530 about $150. I tried a couple out and the size seems right for her. Just look around. HTH
