I agree that there are limitations with today's printers. The only comment that I would have is that one of the advantages of a digital camera is that the images will last forever (as long as you back-up) at the same quality so although the printers that are available today can't always utilize the best quality file today in the future they will be able to and with disk space so cheap (about 1.00 per gig if you watch for sales) and the abilty to store about 200 high resolution pictures for 1.00 my plan is to have the highest quality jpeg that I can. You can always make them smaller but you can't make them bigger.

you can download your pictures and have them printed for .26 for 4x6. Shipping is free if they are sent to your local Walmart store for pickup. I tried this with a "practice" set of pictures before our trip and I was very happy with the result.

I'm heading off today to pick up our 76 pictures of our 8/17 trip. Total came to $19.76.

We take a laptop along and upload the pictures off of the cards as we go. On the last night we brought the laptop along to dinner, and everyone got a chance to revisit the cruise that was just completing. It was an extra benefit of having the computer along that we didn't anticipate.

We're planning on the same procedure for our next cruise coming up in October.

I was given a Kodak One-touch camera for Christmas and love it. I had been warned the the DCs eat batteries, but I am still on the first one and have probably taken 1000 pictures or more by now. I take all my pix at medium res and they come out great. 90% of my shots are for on-line use only, but I just started using Ofoto (they are a Kodak & Amazon partner, so it is really easy for me...) and I can't wait to see how the pix came out.

The major reason that I went with the Kodak is that it has an optional docking station that allows you to transfer your pix (like you synch a Palm Pilot) and re-charge the batteries at the same time if you are using re-chargeables (which I am not yet). I have a small compact flash card and can get over 100 medium res shots into memory.

For a very economical camera, it meets my needs, but I am still not ready to give up my "real" camera yet. I tote both everywhere we go; I still really like using film and I am much better able to manipulate the shots with my SLR camera.

I just have to say THANK YOU to everyone for your very thorough information on digital cameras, I am mulling over which one to purchase myself and this information is very helpful. There is SO much information out there that it is overwhelming, I think I just have to take the plunge and get one.

I use ofoto and the prints are great,they come back within a week from the time I send them off and it is great that family and friends can view them on there website.

This camera is my favorite. It stores the pictures on mini CD-R or CD-R/W, which I buy for about $0.50 each. Each CD holds 185 MB of pictures.

When one CD is full, just pop in another. You can easily share the photos, upload (I use dotphoto.com) and print, etc. The great thing is NO DOCKING!

My pictures turned out great!

I've only had this camera (Kodak DX3600 Zoom) since the beginning of the summer when I added it with my new Dell 8200. I'm happy with both choices!

The download to Walmart.com seemed to be pretty speedy, but I don't know if that was due to my DSL connection, my very fast computer, their website or all three. It was very nice just walking into Walmart to pick up pictures like I usually do, except that these pictures are prepaid. On the website you also have the option of e-mailing pictures or albums and ordering your prints to come framed, enlarged, on mouse pads, mugs, etc.

For all my pictures, I used Best Quality (1800x1200 resolution) using a 64 MB picture card.

My only regret is that I didn't take TONS of pictures just of the decks, lounges, other interior shots, etc. I figured I had seen enough of those types of pictures from other people's wonderful websites, but I really wish I had my own now. Many of my pictures were from the 4 days we spent at WDW at the end of our trip. I have to get used to the idea that I am never "wasting film". I know now I have the option of deleting immediately or later, saving the picture just on the computer, or having a picture printed.

For those new at digital photography like I was, it takes a bit of adjustment. One thing I noticed right off is that there is a 1-2 second delay between the time you push the button and when the picture actually gets taken.

I will certainly be taking many more pictures now. This digital photography stuff is wonderful!

Okay, all of you certainly seem to know digital cameras. So, here's my question: For those who have been on the 7 night trip, how were St. Martin prices on cameras? I've read that St. M has great shoppping bargains(or maybe St. T. also???), but not sure how the digital camera shopping would be. If you all think there is a great deal to be had in the islands, I will figure out exactly what camera I want and what the best price I can find it for, and then wait to find it in St. M. I realize that if I wait, I might not find the one I set out for, but I'll have other film cameras with me, so that would be okay. If the price was not good for the specific camera I had decided on, I would also just not buy. Maybe since you all already have your cameras, you never looked down there. But if so, please let me know if the stores seemed reputable(above all!) and if the prices really were better than buying one here from Best Buy or Circuit City.

An observation.... if you find a "bargain" on the island, it might come back to bite you later. I suspect that what you would be buying on the islands would have a non-USA warranty, or the equivalent of a gray-market warranty were you to buy it here in the states. Gray market warranties are meant for "world" consumption outside the US and are usually not honored within the US. That is why, when puchased here, gray-market items are less expensive. Hence, on the off chance that you do have a problem with your purchase, you might not be covered by the warranty. I sugget you check this before a purchase.

I would get the camera well before you go so you know how to use it on the trip. Good trip shots are more than worth any savings. The grey market point is a good one too.

Get the camera and practice with it before you go is the best photography tip of all.

A few of you posted that you have a Kodak digital camera. You may want to check their web site as I saw on our local news last night that they were recalling one of their cameras because of a risk of shock.
