I'm finally getting a digital camera! But I know nothing about them. HELP! any info would be appreciated.

There's a big sale flyer in today's Globe from some camera place...there's a lot of digitals on there.

It's way too hard to answer your question since there's about a zillion factors involved. It's generally best to get one with a good lens with the characteristics you are looking for (Zoom, max aperture etc.) Personally I like to stick with manufacturers who make cameras as their main product. Try not to get sucked in to the pixel wars, because hi pixel count doesn't always mean sharp, clear and bright photos.

Having a digital camera is great. Consumer Report just did a write up on them. I think it's in the November issue. There are some great models for around $200. Before you buy look around for coupons and/or rebates. One site I like is www.currentcodes.com . I bought my 1st digital from Amazon.com and the 2nd one from Buy.com. Both have great prices. Also if you belong to Costco they have a lot of models so it might be worth a trip just to look at them. Happy shopping.

Shopping for a digital camera can make your head spin! Having just gone through this (getting one for my daughter for christmas) here is what I found out. Digital zoom is not as important as optical zoom. There is some difference between a 3 mega pixal and 4, but not enough between a 4 and 5 to justify the cost, if you want something higher than 4 megapixels wait for a 6 or 7. A 3 or 4 will be fine for most people because most of us won't be printing anything bigger than 8x10's.
After all my head spinning research, I settled on the Cannon S400 elph. It seemed to fit the bill of what I was looking for and I just couldn't take researching and trying to figure the stuff out anymore LOL! It just arrived today, I can't wait to see my daughters face when she opens it!

Oh yes, forget the digital zoom spec. It's no different than putting the pic on your PC and zooming/cropping with your favorite photo editor. Sadly the majority of Point and Shoot digital cams are around 3x optical.
