Digital Camera Question

Hi,

Having taken lots of pictures from our recent holiday we are now hoping to print some off to keep in a folder.

However, I have seen threads in which people have taken the photos to a camera shop and had them processed there (like a normal 'film' camera). In the past we have always printed them ourselves at home - but with the ink and photo paper it does cost quite a lot.

We have a Kodak Easyshare digital camera and as part of the programme there is a 'Order Prints online' section. Having clicked on there I found out that Kodak charge 39p per photo, and when you have almost 200 photos that is £78!! Are there any other sites were you can do this??

Can I load the photos on to a CD and take that to a processing shop, or do I have to take the memory card to a processing shop, or can I do none of this at all! ?

I've got to check that it's still on but when I was in Boots a few days ago they were doing a special offer - 50 prints for £5!! You just have to hand over your memory card.

Pass on that one Richard - I've never saved any phtots that way!

Another place we've used is Photobox . You just email your piccies to them and they print and despatch them that day - so it's a very quick turnaround. I used them a couple of weeks ago to try them out and was very impressed. I only did 5 pics so it cost me 27p per photo but if you pre pay for a batch then the cost goes down to 19p per print.

I've used Bonusprint a few times. Found them very quick and efficient and not expensive. I have just received four 12x8 prints from them at £1.20 each plus 90p postage. Ordered Tuesday night, arrived Friday morning. Normal size is even quicker, ordered Wednesday 23.35, arrived Friday morning; 15p each I think. I just upload them from the computer.

I have ready recently on the MSN photo website that prints from inkjet printers quickly deteriorate, visible by the naked eye within 2 years.

Richard - only a month ago we got prints done of the 196 photos from Florida last October. We were new to all this digital photo lark, but having downloaded all our photos to the PC I was getting nervous in case it crashed.

I went to Boots and now all our digital photos are on a CD (£2.50 each visit, not for each round of photos) and we used the £5 special which Alison mentioned. It's £5 for 50 photos and after that we paid 15p per 6x4. Great quality. All you need to do is take your memory cards in, they then download all the photos there and there, return your card and you go back in 24 hours and collect your piccies. You can even order prints from the CD as it takes you into a host of other options - very good value for money we thought. Don't know about the internal memory, didn't know it had one!

Although we've got ours on the PC, I still like an album, so now we have the best of both worlds.

I've got to get our St Lucia ones developed - and I always take a waterproof disposable for the beach photos, so looking forward to getting ours developed.

Although online processing for digital pictures can seem cheap at some places it is worth looking around your local area as you may be pleased at what some charge.

I have just visited my local Kodak Express branch and their charges are as follows (Not sure if this is for all branches).

6" X 4" Next Day

1 - 14 prints 30p each
15 - 34 @ 20p each
35 or more @ 15p

Same day add 5p per image

This is cheaper than photobox.co.uk at 19p for the cheapest.

I also do not have to pay postage (as I walk in to the shop !!) and do not have to sit at my computer uploading files to an online processing lab.

As to printing from the memory in the camera. I do not think this is possible as most labs use card readers to access your images, but I may be wrong.

One tip I would advise before you go.....

If you have just bought a larger memory card to capture all your many pics. Make sure you format the card, take a few pictures before you go and download them back onto your PC.

I bought a new card once before and took it on a day trip. I did format it and away we went.

Got home and the card had a read error on it. Yes I got an exchange card from the shop as it was faulty but I had no pictures of my trip.
We were most upset.

Some great tips here which I shall print off ready for when we get back from our trip to Canada next month!

I'm also new to digital photography and, like Mrs Dazzle, want to have the best of both worlds and end up with an album of prints as well as something 'secure' like a CD rather than just my hard drive with the photos stored away.

.......and I shall definitely be trying out my new memory cards before we go (thanks for the tip, poohstix )!
