Digital camcorder?

Can anyone please help me out, I would really love to get a camcorder and a digital camera for Christmas, I see these combine both, my question is how are these different than a high-8 camcorder and how exactly do they work? Are they better, and do they record onto a little memeory card like a digital camera or do they use tapes? How is the quality? And if I have a DVD recorder can I hook it up to the TV and record them onto a disk? Any help would really be appreciated. I Thank You for any info you can give me one this and really thankful for the time you will spend explaining it. Thank you.

everything depends on the model you pick. Some record to DVD, some to Mini DV tapes, and now, some record directly to a memory card. My buddy bought one of these for 400 bucks and it does a GREAT job.

Hi 8, obviously, is not digital. So, all the digital cameras are better in that they have higher resolutions.

"Most" camcorders that take still pictures come up short when compared to a dedicated digital camera. Most are limited to 2.1 MP or less. If all you are printing is 5 x7's this is probably ok. If you want to print larger, then no, I would say 2.1 MP is not enough.

Ok, I have last year's model of this one, and it does an awesome job! Mini DV tapes.

Check out the JVC Everio line - If want a model that records straight to a hard drive - these are expensive but I bought one last summer to take to Disney World and loved the small size and ease of use.
