I'm in! :flower:

I'm right there with you guys in that 'challenged' club!! I got a Kodak EasyShare for Christmas. So far I have actually taken several photos and printed one up. It came out very nicely. Now, I have to get myself in gear and buy a memory card. I think it's time to just play with the darn thing. What's the worst that can happen?

If you aren't printing anything larger than 4x6, then you really won't see a difference between a 3MP and 5MP picture.

If you only make 4x6 even 3mp is over kill. But things change as you crop amd or make bigger prints. IHMO compression is just as important as pixel count and the less you use the better.

Do the memory cards come in different sizes? Not the number of pictures, but the actual physical size of the card?

Yes. They are made to hold a certain amount of data. The data for the most part can be anything because the card doesn't care what's on it.

So you need to know how much data a single image from a digital camera uses to determine the number of pics a memory card can hold. This should be considered a rough estimate because other factors (such as a dark scene, a light scene) may produce a picture that doesn't take up as much room other pictures because the image is compressed (obviously to take up less room and use the storage space more efficiently). IOW, you could probably take 1000 pictures of a pitch black room and still have room on your memory card that may normally hold 100 pictures of typical stuff.

I realize this conversation did turn a bit technical, but that's because a lot of camera mfg. and those sites that "review" cameras place more emphasis on megapixels than needs be. From an end user perspective, digital cameras are not all that different from a film camera.

Think of your storage card as your film. The camera takes a picture and writes it to the card. The advantage you now have witha digital camera is you can review the picture you just took. Unlike film where you don't know until you get your film back of the picture was any good or not, with digital you can delete a bad picture before it ever gets printed. Now, when you are done with you picture taking you can take your little card to most any film developing service and have them print your photos for you. You don't have to wait until your card is full do do so as you are really wasting space, as you would be with film

Don't be intimitaded by the technology. It's a camera. Have fun taking pictures and let someone else worry about the technology? :cool1:

But she would need a new digital camera to take a picture of the one she wants to sell.

Sorry I wasn't home to respond to the last 2 posts sooner!!! OMG.....so very funny!
DH has a memory stick in the video camera to take digital stills. Not the best quality, but we actually get very few printed . He has tried his darnest trying to talk me into going digital. I think he has changed his mind since it's about twice as much the cost to develop. We had 36 digital prints developed and it was like $10.something. I can get 36 prints of 35mm developed for $5.30 (inc. tax)! So, I think he's going to let me keep my 35mm and I'll be happy. Btw, I am an absolute shutter-bug! I love to take all kinds of pictures. We were at MK for 1 day last year and I took about 14 rolls--for 1 day!! :earseek: ....anyway, I'll be starting that club soon!!!
