Hi i have got a new digital camera for our disney trip but am taking a film camera too! i have heard horror stories about whites lines appearing on the film because of the scanning machines at the airport, how can i avoid this?
Don't listen to horror stories! Unless you are using very, very fast film, you shouldn't have a problem. You can also get your film developed in Orlando, obviating the problem altogether.
If you have any worries ask to have your film hand checked.
Lead lined film bags are available, but pointless, because they just force airport security to turn up the intensity of the x-rays until they can see through them.
used our digital camera, aug 02, no prob at all, getting the photos printed is U.S is very cheap, walmart, walgreens etc which would, as andrew said avoid the problem and give you something to drool over on the way home, as you plan your return trip!
As a professional photographer I can step in here and confidently say that digital media is completely safe in airport security equipment. There is more information on this at http://www.i3a.org/pr_12_15_04.html
Films of up to ISO 400 should not be affected by a few passes through x-ray units though the effect is cumulative and high speed film (ISO 800 and above) can be damaged at a single pass. As suggested already the best way to be 100% safe is to buy your film in the US and have it processed there the good exchange rate should help with the cost too!
By the way, while in the US FAA regulations do allow you to require your films to be hand checked but according to the BAA this is only available in the UK to professional photographs by prior arrangement! Security agents at British airports will sometimes do hand checks as a courtesy but they are not required to so do ask very nicely
I had my camera films in my hand luggage my films were a mixture of 200ASA and 400ASA,they were fine i brought them back to England and had them developed.I have some on the Dis community gallery if you would like to have a look.
They are quite strict at Orlando International about taking undeveloped film through in suitcases so be warned - if you have packed it they will make you take it out and put it in your hand luggage. I have seen it happen more than once. Given the delays in security at MCO it is a headache you do not need.
If you are travelling with Virgin and check-in at Downtown Disney they will also request you re-pack the films into your hand luggage.
It seems a bit silly to me but then, rules are rules!
if any body is interested go here for memory for your digital camera great bargain.i have actually bought 2 lots for my digital camera. http://www.mymemory.co.uk/
twin pack of 128 mb xd picture card.....£17.99
We were first told about it in 2003 (when my DS had to retrieve her films from her suitcase at MCO - and then made the kids sit on it until we could close it again -very embarassing in the middle of a busy airport I can tell you!!)
Virgin asked us about it last week at DD check-in so it is obviously an ongoing policy.
The new Walmart on HWY 27 has a photo developing desk which is quite quick and reasonably priced, they also put Digital photos onto CD which works out much cheaper than buying extra memory sticks for your camera.
ok thanks sue i will be putting my films in my hand luggage then or developing out there.
but i was out there in feb last year and was not questioned about it......
