~*~*NOTE! This is for my mom, NOT me!~*~
A little background before I ask the question......
My mom is 39 yrs old and struggling with her weight. She practically has NO metabolism. She has had 3 kids. She jump ropes about 10-20 minutes everyday, and eats pretty healthy, but not the best. She is at those last 10-15 lbs that are hard to lose, and she REALLY wants them off!

She was wondering what kind of diet pills/aids you may have used that show results. That are safe. The ones that kick up your metabolism have made her have a racy heart and she just doesn't like them. She has tried Metabolife, Zantrex, Hydroxycut, TrimSpa. I know it sounds like she has been on many pills and is an addict, but she really isn't. She's used those brands over the past 5 yrs or so.

Anybody have any succes with things like SlimQuik, Smartburn, Everslim etc?

Thanks for any help!!!!!

I don't think ANY of those "diet" pills are safe. Has she talked to her doctor to make sure there aren't any problems?

Otherwise, maybe if she really watched what she ate, etc. the extra pounds might come off. Those last 10 or so are a real bear to get off!

Please try to talk her out of any diet pills - they are not a solution.

I have tried several of them, I think they're all hooey. I have know ppl who lost weight with hydroxycut, but they were totally hyped up the whole time. You could tell they were on something. I have lost a lot of weight (see below) and I have an incredibly slow metabolism, and blood sugar issues as well. I have found the answer if you are on a plateau is exercise. Waaaay more than you thought you needed, or possibly waaaay harder. Lots of charts say exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes or so, and this just wont do it if you are at that point. 5 or six days a week, and 45 mins or so to get going again.

First she should go to the dr for a thyroid check to make sure everything is ok.

Second she needs to do more exercise 45 min to an hour daily. I wear a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps aday- it really helps motivate me to move. Also she needs to add some weight training into her exercise routine. The older you are you lose lean muscle mass. When you build more muscle it will burn more fat raising your metabolism. And No you will not get big and bulky from the weights like a guy does.

And she needs to make sure that she is not starving herself - sometimes when you hit a plateu and do not lose you actually need to slightly increase your calories - if you take in too few calories you body will think it is in starvation mode and it will hold on to your last few pounds.

I just turned 40 and all these things help me when I get off track and need to lose a few pounds. I try to eat healthy but I also practice moderation. I eat what ever I want but I limit the portions - so if I want a cookie I have a cookie not 5 or if I want some potatoe chips I have a serving and not the whole bag. It is really hard to do at first but once you get use to it - it really helps knowing that you can have what ever you want but just in smaller portions. Also for some people it helps them when they have 6 mini meals aday instead of 3 big meals. Tell your mom good luck! It is harder to get the weight off the older you get but there are things that can help you along the way.

Thanks guys!!! I think I've kind of gotten her away from the idea of diet pills.....we kind of got into it last night because I was telling her that she should diet differently (she seems to think that a bowl of cereal in the morning, a few laffy taffys during the day and supper will help her loose weight, which we all know isn't true) I was getting mad at her because I am so concerned about her health. So I looked at Weight Watchers for her, and she might do that again. Hopefully so! Thanks again!

Forget the diet pills, especially if she's had an arrythmia in the past. She should make an appointment with a nutritionist who will review her diet and make suggestions on how she can eat healthier and lose the weight she wishes to lose. Hint: portion sizes and varied nutrients at each meal go a long way to losing those stubborn pounds. And I agree, stepping up the exercise would help a lot, too. Thanks for being a concerned daughter! :goodvibes

Weight Watchers works for me! You have to eat to lose weight and you have to eat the right things!

I tried those pills in the past too, and they are hooey and I don't think safe either. I am 37 and have 2 kids myself, my last one just turned 5 months old. My biggest weight loss secret (and how to maintain it) is to eat breakfast every day and what I eat is a bowl of Raisin Bran with skim milk. I am telling you, it sheds the weight like crazy, for me at least it did after two kids. I was down to my pre-pregnancy weight within 12 weeks both times. Thw key is eating right. And I have treats every day, so I don't go without. :goodvibes

Weight Watchers is a good place to get some good advice. Also have her check out the WISH boards here on the DIS - lots of Disers are here to help others and motivate them to reach their weightloss goals :)
