Didn't know where to post this thread so I'll try it here. Going on my first self-planned Disney Trip and trying to see how "Green" we can make it. Any tips or ideas? What about hotels? Any websites to check? I googled a few different things and couldn't find anything. Please help!!!!:worship:

I would read all through this website and Disneyworld.com. Choice of hotel would depend on what you are looking for during your stay. Do you want to be close to anything in particular, want the full package or inexpensive accomodations.

There's a ton to learn on this site. It takes a while to read it all but it's so worth it :cool1:

Welcome to the DIS!

:welcome:
I've never thought about what's "green" at Disney. I know if you hang your towels back up, they won't wash them that day and they change sheets every 3 days I think to save on water.

As for hotels, I'd recommend staying onsite if you can. That way the buses and monorails can be your transportation which is definitely greener than driving yourself to the parks.

You should pick up a Passporter book (my favorite for beginning WDW) or the Unofficial Guide book. Both are great and will help you chose your onsite resort, the type of tickets you want, and which parks you want to visit.

You'll also learn alot from the Disboards. :)

Are you talking about the lime green mickey paint chips you get at Homedepot?:rotfl2:

I think you can do some of the same things you do at home. If you are going to be down there for more than a few days and staying onsite, buy the refillable mugs at your resort - nice souvie and your not using and throwing away paper/plastic cups several times a day. Sheets/towel idea was already mentioned, bring your own shampoo in your checked luggage so your not using a bunch of small bottles that are getting sent to the landfill. Ask for a cup of free water when you are in the parks, then keep it in your backpack and fill it at the water fountains rather than buying bottles of water every day that, again, end up in the landfills. The small packets of crystal light, etc. can mask the bad taste of the water down there. Don't leave the water run while you brush your teeth, take short showers/no baths. Turn off the lights when you're not there, keep the AC at a decent level, keep the curtains closed to keep the sun out the room. Etc. Etc. Etc. There are endless ways to keep your trip green even if the hotel isn't a true green hotel.
Was this any help at all. ;)

:thumbsup2 Thanks everyone! These have been very helpful tips. We are staying at Pop Century, which is a green hotel, and plan on using the bus service the whole time. The mug idea is a good one. I'll have to grab one. Also, does anyone know the policy about bringing a water bottle (empty) into the park so I can fill it at water fountains?

You can bring water bottles, empty or full, into the parks and then refill them as needed. You can also bring snacks if you would like in a back pack or purse. Rolling coolers or large coolers are not acceptable though.

Just thought this was a great thread and idea! :thumbsup2
Its really nice to see someone carrying thru on "green living" even on vacation. I have to be honest, it never even crossed my mind!

I suppose to go along w/ the hanging your towels idea so that you don't get new ones, you could actually leave the do not disturb on the door at all times, or request little to no mousekeeping (if we're not staying long we tend to do this anyway... I don't vacuum my floors at home that much! I don't see that they need to be vacuumed everyday while I'm on vacation!) You'd be saving water and electric that way.

I didn't realize POP was a "green" resort. I'll have to check that out. (We've only stayed onsite once, and probably won't be back for a while... :sad1: ) But, we had a blast, and I hope you do too!

Magic Kingdom is a very "green" park. They actually hand sort their trash. That's right somebody hand sorts every bag of trash so that it is properly recycled. They are required to recyle 35% of their trash and from what I have heard they do DOUBLE that number. It's pretty amazing. I'm not sure if they do it in the other parks. I haven't taken the tours!

I would assume they'd do it at the other parks - especially since Epcot has very "pro-green" attractions, and AK has the paper straws to protect the animals.

I read your question and then came AAA magazine with an article on traveling green.
www.usgbc.org and www.greenhotels.com were two sites listed as well as the idea of buying carbon credits to offsite your trip. Sites listed for that were: www.sustainabletravelinternational.org, www.climatefriendly.com, www.nativeenergy.com and organizations listed additionally include Driving Green and Carbon Fund.
I didn't check to see if the article was on the website, but it had some interesting information. I'm glad you posted the question. We are going in October and it didn't even occur to me to ask the question. This is my first posting too!!

HOtels are asking us not to change sheets every day, or towels

bring the new nalgene bottles and drink tap water, or filtered water from the resorts - you can buy a refillable mug!

I never use their bags - I either carry my stuff, or have a large bag I keep withme!

Great websites! I found them to be very helpful. Glad people are enjoying this post. I was a little nervous of being made fun of :flower3:

No reason to be nervous--this is a great thread. We stay at the CSR and hang our towels for several days and have left a note for mousekeeping that it is not necessary to change our sheets until the fifth or sixth day--I only change ours at home once a week and don't expect or need them changed more than that on my vacation. We also gets the refillable cup at the resort and the souvenir cup at the parks and then I just have them refill those (I pay of course) when I get a soda later in the day so as not to have to throw out so many paper cups.
