both dd's are in middle school now, older dd in 8th grade and younger dd in 6th grade.

the school has been going through a major construction/renovation project since just before older dd was in 6th grade. but it had minimal impact on the way the school functioned.

until now.

6th grade orientation was tuesday, and the first day of classes was yesterday. both girls came home complaining about the mess at school.

older dd had a dental appointment today, and I picked her up at school, so I got to see what was going on first-hand.

when I got to the school, there was an ambulance parked out front. one of the construction workers had had an accident, and the ambulance crew had to whell his stretcher through the halls to evacuate him from the building -- and one of the teachers walked ahead, making sure classroom doors were closed so that the students didn't see what was going on.

the new lockers have been installed, sort of. they're not bolted to the walls yet, so the kids can't use them. they have to carry their backpacks all day. a major hallway is completely blocked off, as work is being done there. and there are construction workers in other hallways, with equipment and ladders and such -- I almost tripped over one of the ladders on my way to the office to get my dd.

ugh!

Gosh, I would think that you were my neighbor. The middle school and the high school are going through construction now. When all of the faculty and staff in the district met in the high school auditorium I giggled as the construction workers were in and out in their hard hats. But at the moment mold is a major issue in the district.
My elementary school finished construction (with bulldozers and jackhammer sounds just outside my classroomm window). We are still working on punch list items.
mold isn't an issue at our school luckily, but wee will be housng another elementary schools kindergarten classes for a few weeks.

our building is being expanded to accomodate an increase in our student population. the new gym and new science classrooms are ready. but the new auditorium and music classrooms are not done yet, and the old auditorium is being converted into a library/media center.

they expanded our elementary school last year. added four new classrooms. managed to do it all over the summer.

what worries me -- rumor is the high school will start major renovations next year, just as older dd starts her freshman year.

that high school was state of the art when it was build in 1975 -- I was a student there that year, and we started classes before the work was finished -- but I don't think it's had any major renovations since it opened.

reminfds me of my HS years. I went to class and took test with back ground Back up beepers and Heavy construction going on outside for a year and half. I had to laugh at my American Lit. teacher when he asked me if I wanted to go to a differnt class room to take my final exam. I was thinking I have been to class and taken tests with the noise for a year now and he wanted to know if I wanted to move. I told him if I did I'd probably fail b/c it would be too quiet.

My kids school is under construction too - adding space. Unfortunately it won't add space for our current population - we'll still have six classes in portables! We'll be housing the district behavior modification program. That should make subbing there really fun!;)

The construction is taking place adjacent to the Kindergarten classrooms where I sub often. It'll be interesting to see how much noise comes through the wall. The parking lot is 1/2 full of construction stuff so teachers have to park on parts of the playground and drop off etc. has been very interesting.

I sort of understand, Commack is starting the same thing with their high school.

I got out just in time though. The only difference was my senior year they added portable classrooms (the "trailor park as both teachers and students called them).

This year the teachers must park in the senior lot because the expansion is starting where the lot used to be, and the seniors must park in the former junior lot.

Getting a bit messy already, I'm glad I got out when I did!

My boyfriends younger sister just started as a freshman, and she says that half her friends don't even have lockers because there aren't any available. Last year they added so many lockers to walls that were formerly empty, and it still isn't enough.

A school here in the Tampa Bay area just had a fatal construction accident last week --

A 47-year-old contractor working at Trapnell Elementary School died Thursday after he was accidentally struck by a power saw.

Hillsborough sheriff's officials said James Eugene Doiron of Ruskin, an employee of Apollo Construction Co., was cutting concrete with a large saw Thursday morning when it became stuck. When he tried to free the saw, it struck him in the neck and shoulder.

He was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Doiron was working on a $17,000 drainage system at the school. Hillsborough school spokesman Mark Hart said no children witnessed the accident.

It was a terrible tragedy. :(

I feel for your DDs!

The law center here underwent MAJOR renovation during my last two years there and it was just awful! Nothing like seeing asbestos detectors lying around throughout the school.

wow, princess. and the sad part is, your district owns several buildings they've rented out and could really use again...your middle school used to be a high school, you know.

I know, we got a whole booklet on the history of the Commack School District. It's rather weird reading that a building in the community really used to be an elementary school.

I could never imagine the middle school being Commack South High though. It is so tiny compared to Commack North! Even the lockers are half the size.

I've never been inside the building, but I drive past it often.

my younger dd is quick to tell anyone who'll listen "that's where Rosie O'Donnell went to high school!"

she doesn't know who Ralph Macchio is, or she'd be quick to point out his alma mater (Ralph went to high school with my younger sister.)
