Did your parents go to college?

No. In our family only one aunt attended college from my parents’ generation. For reference though, these people were all born in the 1920’s and 1930’s, so I don’t think college was very common back then.

No idea if my dad attended College. I was never made aware of it and no record of it.

My mom went to Nursing School. Not sure if that counts as College, as her Nursing School was not affiliated with any College. It was a three year program in Canada, taught entirely at a hospital with none of the usual College type General Education classes. My mom was very disappointed when the 3 year nursing schools closed in 1997. Now nurses get a BSN, which included two years of general education requirements, and two years of nursing training......."two year wonders" she called them since they got one year less nursing training.

I believe I was the first person on either side of family that went to college. I only went to community college.

2nd cousin went there when I was 2nd year. I'm the oldest of the grandchildren on Dad's side, and brother and I are the only grandchildren on mom's side.

A first cousin couple years younger than I am went to tech school. I think that's it for my entire family.

My dad was first in his family to go to college but many went to college on my mom's side. She did too. :)

The nursing school your mother attended was a 2 year program for decades before it closed in 1997.

My parents both had bachelor’s degrees.

Short answer - yes.
Longer answer - My father went back to college when we got out of the Army (retired on 100% disability). He had completed 2 years before joining the Army, and completed his BA before he died. My mother had never gone to college, and my father kept telling her she should go. Knowing he wouldn't be around to help with finances, he felt she would be able to get a better job with a degree. She kept saying "It would take me 10 years to finish a degree" Mostly because she would also be raising kids on her own. My father's reply "How old will you be in 10 years if you go to college? How old will you be in 10 years if you don't go to college?" So she started. It took her 10 years (as she said) but she got her BA.

Her next step, at work one of her bosses asked if she would going into the Masters program. Before she could answer, another boss said "She'd never qualify for the program...." Well, she did qualify, and 5 year later she had her masters.

That could also explain the 2 year wonder remark she made.

I think it went from 3 to 2 years in the late 60s perhaps.
And her school closed before the other hospital nursing schools - I think 1995 - and was used for a short time as a part of the local university Bachelors program.

Today it houses the education department of the hospital plus a museum of the old nursing school. I think the physical building Your mom went to is gone and newer building is from the 60s.

Their website says it closed in 1997. She was last there in 2006 for her 60th class reunion and toured the current facilities.
Highlight of her trip was the President of her class noting that there were 110 students in her class, 101 were still alive, and 90 were in attendance. "Not bad considering we are all in our 80's, and we are the generation that grew up cooking everything in 3 inches of bacon grease."

My mom was an immigrant with an 8th grade education. I remember her getting a GED when she was about 50 in order to get a real estate license.

My dad was in the army in WW II and went to college after on the GI Bill. He went to college at night while working, it was a special location set up by a local college to educate the veterans.

No. My great grandmother never went to school and was illiterate. My grandmother finished 9th grade. My parents graduated high school. I'm going to graduate from law school next year. I like to think my great grandmother would be proud.

No, they both dropped out of high school. My dad did get a GED when he was in his 40's and also took some college courses (evening division) after he got that. Not many more then three or four.
