Did Your Children Get "Summer Homework?"

I started a thread awhile ago when I found out DS's elementary was doing MANDATORY summer work for all students. It is a public school and they are the only elementary in the entire district that sent this stuff home. I am vehemently opposed to summer homework, if anybody is keeping a tally.

DS is going to 5th grade. He is required to read one novel (below his reading level and not very long) and choose one activity from a list to complete as it relates to the book. OK, not too bad. He started the book yesterday because my personal rule is he has to read a minimum of 30 minutes every day. He finished the book he was reading, so I told him to read the required one.

They also sent home a workbook. A workbook designed to take 10 weeks to complete. They sent it home the last day of school with absolutely no discussion beforehand and no explanation of what will happen if DS doesn't complete it. I think most likely he will not do the workbook in it's entirety.

DS has ADD and we haven't found any effective treatment so far. I refuse to medicate him over the summer because he doesn't have behavior issues and he is in the 15% for height and weight. He needs to have as much of an appetite as possible before he goes back to school and we start on yet another round of meds. Fighting with him about doing workbook pages is NOT on my summer agenda.

My son is going into 8th grade and he is going to be with the same team he has had this year. His Language Arts teacher gave her students a novel assignment to read and they need to complete a weekly journal on what they do during the summer. There should be approx 10 entries.

I'm happy that he has some structure that he can maintain over the summer, so he isn't so rusty when he gets back. I give him more than that to read because I think it is more important than playing video games. But then again, I am a teacher.
